#1: Assuming the Bulls sign Jimmy Butler to a max contract, the Bulls won?t have cap space to sign any impact free agents. That means Chicago will be competing for an NBA title next year with exactly the same roster they had this year. [And if the Bulls don?t resign Butler, they?ll need to sign someone who can replace his 20 PPG average.] What makes anyone think they can contend with the Atlanta Hawks or Cleveland Cavaliers - much less anyone from the Western Conference - with the exact same team as this year?
#2: Derrick Rose was finally able to make it through an entire season - albeit, he still missed 31 regular season games - but how likely is that to happen again after playing a total of 49 games in the previous three seasons combined? And even if he does make it through another full season, Rose is clearly not the MVP player he was before a litany of knee injuries, as evidenced by his meager 40% shooting from the field and how he was bottled up by Matthew Dellavedova in the playoffs once the Cavaliers realized Kyrie Irving was too injured to guard a folding chair.
#3: Pau Gasol had a phenomenal season but will be 35 by the time the 2015-16 NBA season rolls around. Will he still be able to average 18.5 PPG, 11.8 RPG and 1.9 BPG as Father Time keeps creeping up on him? It?s highly doubtful.
#4: Joakim Noah?s contract has turned into an Albatross. He?s owed over $13 million next season despite the fact he regressed mightily this past season. He?s nowhere near the defensive player he was just a couple years ago and offensively he?s basically non-existent. In the entire playoff series with Cleveland, Noah scored 30 points in six games. Once players start regressing past the age of 30, very few turn it around as they continue to get older.
#5: The Bulls are basically counting on Nikola Mirotic to be the missing link on their roster. There?s no doubt that Mirotic had a great rookie season for the Bulls, averaging 10.2 PPG and averaging 31.6% from downtown. But if Mirotic is supposed to be the difference between the conference semifinals and an NBA title, the Bulls are seriously delusional.
