Wednesday: 2 US Soldiers, 31 Iraqis Killed; 42 Iraqis Wounded

Updated at 6:55 p.m. EDT, Mar. 19, 2008

As President Bush marked the five anniversary of the invasion of Iraq with a speech, at least 31 Iraqis were killed and another 42 were wounded in the latest violence. Two American soldiers were also killed.

An American soldier was killed in a vehicle rollover in Diyala province today. Also, the DOD announced the death of a U.S. soldier during an incident that is currently under investigation.

In Basra, 17 border guards were killed in different parts of the city; it is not yet known whether the attacks were carried out by the same gunmen or otherwise coordinated. A policeman was gunned down in central Basra. A roadside bomb targeting a senior police officer injured a bodyguard and two civilians instead.

A U.S. patrol admitted to accidentally killing three Iraqi policemen and wounding a fourth during an incident in Kirkuk.

A female suicide bomber killed five people and wounded 16 at a market in Balad Ruz.

In Baghdad, gunmen attacked a money exchange business where they killed the owner, wounded an employee, and stole $115,000. Three Awakening Council (Sahwa) members and a civilian were wounded at a checkpoint when gunmen lobbed a grenade at them. In Karrada, a bomb attached to a car killed a military official and wounded another.

In Mosul, a suicide bomber wounded 14 people, including Iraqi soldiers, during an attack on a patrol in Intisar.

Gunmen attacked a Sahwa checkpoint in Tikrit, where they killed one member and wounded two others.

A roadside bomb killed one policeman and wounded two more in Iskandariya. Another bomb killed a woman and wounded two others; a second bomb exploded not long after the first bomb, but a third bomb was defused.

The bodies of two Iraqi security guards were found in Karbala.

An oil pipeline was set on fire in Mussayab.

Iran shelled locations in northern Iraq believed used by Kurdish separatists belonging to Party for Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) rebels. No casualties were reported.

In Diyala province, 54 detainees were freed after proving they were innocent of crimes.

Also, U.S. forces now say they did not arrest the chief of the National Front of Iraqi Tribes, Sheikh Rasheed al-Ziydan, during a raid yesterday.

I just saw that clip. I gotta hand it to him - at least he's genuine in his disgust of the American people.

Today was a wonderfully sad microcosm of this administration and where they have led us. Cheney with his flippant dismissal of anyone having a differing opinion, blaming it on unnamed polls (when I think we ALL agree are probably fairly accurate), and Bush bringing this finally full cycle to saying we are now in Iraq as a matter of the world economy (meaning oil, which some of us have been repeatedly ridiculed for saying the same thing for five years).

A sad, ongoing JOKE, that some here and elsewhere still try to defend. We have 90% of our forces in Iraq, and 10% of them supposedly hunting for Bin Laden - but not going where he is reported to be, for political reasons. Today, on the 5th anniversary of this elective war which took our forces away from the war on terror, Bin Laden releases a message attacking the Pope, and further embarrassing Bush and our country (because of Bush).

Bush and Cheney have been wrong about everything they have said about Iraq. (And just about everything else) How they can still continue to lie to the American people is beyond belief. They must truly have no shame. And that is what makes them so dangerous.

yep and about --

140,000 Iraq-OIF (CENTCOM)
73,500 Germany (EUCOM)
41,360 South Korea (PACOM)
40,680 Japan (PACOM)
38,160 Kuwait-OIF (CENTCOM)

now you think all the nato troops added in 07 had any impact on us being able to cut our troop deployment there in more than half--evidently you think that was a bad thing?

---We all have our views on embarrassment--yours on UBL dogging the pope--

--Mine is UBL and Al-Zarchawi saying IRAQ would their central war and they would unite other muslims to drive U.S. forces out--as it's turned out we and muslims in Iraq-afgan-Saudi Yemin ect are uniting to drive them out
--and the embarrassing factor is we have party wanting to retreat and give all these gains away and once again snatch defeat from jaws of victory on a political oriented agenda.

--of course if you believe Obama yesterday--we aren't any safer will these muslim allies aiding in fight vs AQ as we were when then were training/plotting openly--with get out of jail free cards.

spy..instead of just posting body counts and inflammatory rhetoric, let me ask you a serious question...

if say, obama gets elected....and he does as he claims...pulls us out immediately....what do you think will happen in iraq?....

don`t you think that a security vacuum will be created?...and who do you think will fill that vacuum?...

maybe iran?....maybe that`s what you`d like?..

you think theres potential for wholesale slaughter and retribution ala our precipitous pull-out of viet nam?....

another instance of america abandoning those that chose to help us...turning our backs...leaving them to be slaughtered....

why do you think ahmadinnerjacket was just in iraq?......the prospect of an obama presidency and it`s result....

"" Maliki and the other new Iraqi leaders don't want their country to become an Iranian satellite; they're trying to negotiate a long-term arrangement to keep America committed to Iraq until it can defend itself.
Ahmadinejad believes the United States lacks the staying power to consolidate its victory in Iraq. Encouraged by Sen. Barack Obama's promise to withdraw all US troops by the end of 2009 if he wins the White House (which the Iranians expect him to do), Ahmadinejad's message to Iraqis is simple: The Americans are leaving, wouldn't you like to join our side? ".....

sounds o.k. to you,eh,spy?

and where`s "our oil"?...this was a war for oil,right?...so why haven`t we commandeered it?...we`re not getting much benefit from that oil...but,it`s in OUR best interests that our enemies don`t control it,either...remember hussein invading kuwait?....if we`d stayed out of it,the world as we know it would be completely different....

you want us out...well,maybe their government wants us to stay until they`re more capable of handling security...until they`ve got a better handle on distribution of their oil wealth to the different factions inside their fragile society......

i guess you have no idea how long and arduous the process of forming our own government was 2 1/4 centuries ago....i don`t blame you...i`m sure youreself and your family were busy bowing to mecca 5 times a day with your asses swaying in the breeze...

maybe the saudi arabia`s and the kuwaits want our continued presence in the area to offset potential aggression from iran and/or the terrorists that want the royal family and other relatively friendly gov`ts ousted so they can proceed in taking the middle east even farher back into the 13th century........

they`d like us to abandon support of friendlier leaders...like carter abandoned the shah....

you think this war has cost us much in blood and treasure?...

we withdraw precipitously, and the shit hits the fan(as it inevitably would),do you have any idea how expensive...how logistically difficult it would be to redeploy after we withdrew?...

obviously you don`t...

bin laden wanted us out of the middle east...who the hell is bin laden?....we`re there with the blessing of each country and their government...they put up with our presence...they need our protection...,..last time i checked, rogue terrorists don`t make foreign policy for a country, unless you`re hamas..... and look at that MESS....

do we agree ideologically with all these governemnets?...no

did we agree ideologically with stalin?...no..

was it in our best long term interests to make stalin our ally in wwII?....the saudis and the kuwaiti`s and the iraqi`s of the world our allies now?....yes..

Just got back to the office from court in Boone County (Kentucky) Circuit Court. Driving up I-75 north into Ohio. Passed rusting pick up truck, Ky plates with gun rack. Bumper sticker:

"NObama"

Just an observation from the heartland.

DTB where you find all those other countries troops. Most have left Iraq or never got there. And were not cutting ours in half. Just today Gen B said he wants delay of 4 to 6 weeks for first 20000. And when those to come out that leaves us with more then surge count. And some go to Afghan to fnish job we never did. This is about Cheney for sure not giving a dam about anyone but him self. And why you Reb's like the guy who helped drag down your guy Bush. Bush did a good job of that himself. But Cheney cost you even more.

Would you rather fight the terrorists in the US? That is what will happen if we pull out of Iraq

This is who would fill the vacuum in less than 30 days. He would send his army to cut throats and take names. There would be a new Saddam in power in Iraq, in control of all that oil , ready to squeeze Americans at the pumps and other places. Its sad we are so stupid. We should have killed Al Sadr by now.

The Pentagon has identified Sadr's militia as the biggest threat to stability in the war-ravaged country, even ahead of the Iraqi al-Qa'eda network. But analysts have also pinpointed the rise of a series of powerful "special groups" that have sprung from the militia and are believed to be beyond Sadr's control.

One such group is believed to have been behind the audacious kidnapping of four British security contractors and a computer expert snatched from an Iraqi government building.

Sadr's own behaviour has become increasingly erratic. He reacted to the United States surge to stabilise central Iraq by fleeing to Iran.

Most of his fighters in the capital are reported to have disappeared to avoid the military crackdown and taken shelter in Shia-dominated southern Iraq.

..........................................................

really how stupid are we.

Once a new president is elected the rules will be given to them and it does not include a pullout from Iraq. No way no how, no matter what Hillary wants to lie about. She and Obama both know the truth. The US will be there for many years.

Anyone think they might be here already. And who ever said they come from Iraq. That story is flat out wrong. And they only visit every 9 years. So don't count yourself lucky just yet. Cheney keeps spreading his half truth B S to scare people.

Yes. Well said. The fear plays well with some people though.

Stevie can you kindly get your facts straight. It gets old when you keep repeatedly blame Cheney for getting everything wrong. This video will show how wrong you are about Dick.
