In the 30 plus years that I have attended this tournament, this has to be the weakest field in history....very sad. I mean...Tiger, Phil, Ernie, Davis and all of the old greats have won here.
Lord Byron used to write all the top players handwritten letters asking them to come to his tournament. When he died a few years ago they no longer got the guilt trips and they all stopped attending, for the most part. When Mahan and Johnson are the 2 lowest odds, you have a serious problem.
Oh well...Colonial next week has a nice field.
For this week....

Slocum 30-1 win, 15-1 place, 7 1/2 show

Fowler 30-1 win, 15-1 place, 7 1/2 show

Gay 50-1 win, 25-1 place, 12 1/2 show

Day 100-1 win, 50-1 place, 25-1 show

As always, good luck to all!

Round 1 play (4pts):

Heath Slocum to beat J.B. Holmes -102 @ Pinnacle [also available @ FiveDimes and WSEX]
Opposing Holmes again after picking the wrong round to do so on Sunday. He has played in this event twice previously, missing the cut by five and six shots on those two occasions and while he has been playing well, there should be some doubt/frustration growing in his game. Two weeks ago he led the Players Championship after the 1st round and didn't shoot under 70 again, while last week he led the Texas Open after Sunday morning's round, but then collapsed spectacularly in the afternoon: seven-over-par for his opening nine holes. Slocum, by contrast, has been much less noticeable, but he has been in good form, finishing 18th in The Masters, 8th in the Verizon Heritage, 29th in the Quail Hollow Championship and 4th in the Players Championship in the last five weeks. With that form he can easily match Holmes, and particularly on a par-70 course.

Dallas, you are so right what terrible field. When i use to caddy on tour 91-99 everyone wanted to play the nelson, but the stars cant play every week. So anything can happen this week like last week Adam Scott wow i would of played him at 60-1 or higher not the 25-1 he was but he won so.But it will be fun anyway hope your guys have a shot if mine dont....

Play suspended due to inclement weather while the first groups were still on the course and before the afternoon groups could start. Gives me a chance to add some more plays.

Pampling irons out kinks in his game

Rod Pampling may have stumbled upon the key to turning around his mediocre form on the US PGA Tour.

After missing the cut at the Players Championship two weeks ago, Pampling returned to his American home in suburban Dallas.

Puzzled after another poor performance, the Queenslander brought out an old set of irons to hit on the range, more out of curiosity than expectation.

Advertisement: Story continues below
The improvement, he says, was emphatic and immediate.

"I had been scratching my head wondering why my iron play had been hurting but suddenly I was able to hit the shots I used to hit," an enthusiastic Pampling said as he prepared for the Byron Nelson Championship starting in Irving, Texas on Thursday.

"I haven't been hitting it like this for quite a while, so I'm excited to be playing again.

"I've gone back to blades and Im using my old shafts, which are a lot stiffer than the ones I've been using the past couple of years.

"They don't make these shafts any more, so when I need to replace them I might have to go looking on eBay."

Pampling, 40, describes his form the past couple of years as hit or miss. He has had his moments, including victory at the 2008 Australian Masters, but has struggled as often as not.

He is a lowly 162nd on this year's US PGA money list, but there have been extenuating circumstances, besides the equipment problem.

He made two quick trips back to Queensland in March - the first to visit his gravely ill father-in-law and the second for the funeral.

It was obviously a tough time for Pampling, and even more so for wife Angela, and golf for a while was not his top priority.

"It's something you have to deal with," said Pampling, who is now trying to focus on his game again.

This week at least he won't have to return to a hotel at the end of the day. Instead, he can enjoy the rare luxury of being able to sleep in his own bed.

Pampling is part of a large 16-strong Australian contingent at the Four Seasons TPC that is notably missing Adam Scott, taking a well-earned break after his Texas Open victory on Sunday.
