Been capping this game for over a week. Both teams lost so many players.BYU's offense got wiped out. The season ended on such a bad note. After leading the nation in so many offensive catogories and going 12-0,they had to play Hawaii in a bowl game.BYU scores 45 pts and loses. The "Bows" score 72.BYU lost 8 starters this yr.on defense. Is that good news or bad news?
Cuses offense got wiped out.Their top RB,FB,WR,4 O-Linemen,TE and 3 cheerleaders are all gone.On defense they lost their "all world" DE and sack leader. But they do return 6 starters and have "all world" MLB Clifton Smith. He is awesome and will be a 1st rd NFL pick.

This is a very tough game to capp. There are so many unknowns on both sides here.BYU replaces Doman with 6'4 Englemann. He is accurate and has a strong arm.Typical BYU QB.Their top OL Archibald is out for the season.A revamped OL must protect him and open up holes for Whalen because Staley is gone.BYU does have a stud WR in Mahe and 2 other solid WR's.At TE they have 2 bookends that are excellent.
Cuse has RJ back at QB.Somewhat controversial but is 11-2 as a starter. Not a great arm but can run.OL is weak except at center. They made a whole bunch of moves FB to TE,TE to RG,LG to RT,etc, etc. There young and inexperinced.Losing 9 starters on offense is a lot.
But they lost Mungro who gained almost every yd for the Cuse lyr.His 3 replacements have a total of 170 yds between them.
I see the Cuse having a lot of penalties on the road.Esp. on the OL
BYU is almost in the same boat. But Crowton is crazy when it comes to running offenses.
He will throw out you, traps, posts, down and outs, slants, reverses, screens, bombs, and even quick snaps when the Cuse players just made a good defensive play and are slapping each other a "high five".I luv this coach.Pasqualoni is more conservative and likes to run the ball.
Trends in this game are even on both sides. ie...Cuse is 3-16 ats as RD's.But 8-3 ats on road openers.BYU HF is losing but Crowton is 5-1 ats at home. But in openers BYU is 3-12 ats in home openers.I can find trends on both sides.
But one trend that opens my eyes is again "playing on grass". Cuse is not a good team on grass. In the last 3 yrs they are 3-7 ats.And that is with some good teams.

I'll take BYU -2 at home. They are 5,000 feet above sea level. The Carrier Dome is 20 ft below sea level. That means the Orangemen are playing 5,020 ft above their norm. They are replacing 9 staters on offense, missing their 2 superstars in Freeney and Mungro, playing just below the ozone on grass with many rookies all over.Mucho penalties.
Do not see a blowout because BYU defense might not be able to stop the Cuse either.
But BYU offense is so sophisticated that the better Cuse defense will tire out there in that 5,000 ft thin air. Also Cuse kicking game loves indoors.Outside is different.
Cuse has better athletics overall but not Thur nite in Provo.
I see BYU winning this one by 10 pts.
Thanks for all the nice comments last week on the Ohio St game.
This is not a strong play on Thur because of the unknown.I'm playing it lightly.
Like the Louisville -13 and will capp my alma mater North Texas-Texas game later in the week. GL

Hey Box,

Wow!
........I love to read your insights.
Nice Job ! (as always)...good to see ya again!

I agree....every which way....and mostly the BYU creativity
late as elevation leaves the "Cuse" a little short....of breath..and on the scoreboard!

NICE WRITE UP

NICE WRITE UP

hey Box-and-one:

love your SN, i coach HS hoops and run the diamond and one, hehe ... anyhow, I dont know squat about BYU/Cuse in opener, but will add: I have watched them play many times, i live in seattle, the UW players have always said how refs cheat there, etc. So if a big call is needed to cover a FG, it might happen

enjoyed your brains in hoops posts,
take care,
pt1gard:D

Well tough for me to agree and not because I live in the cuse I personally do not like them but Coach P has found a way to play very well early in the season against much tougher Last year opened up against GT and played well but then got smacked at UT however the Cuse is 8-3 ATS in last 11 road openers They are poor on grass though at 3-7. Personally I have no luck on them so I will pass on the game I just thought I would post some info. The team seems to be united now without QB problem Anderson is the starter but replacing Mungro in the backfield and Freeny on the defense is not going to be easy but they are capable of the upset in Cat country just due to coaching and talent.

jcjrbowl,my secretary is up there at the Cuse. She 's at the Fair.
I worked Jimmy Boe's b-ball camp many moons ago up there.
My HS team beat Bishop Grimm of Cuse in the mid-90's in Glenn Falls in the state semi-finals.I was down for 31 minuts but took the lead with a minut left.Won by 4 pts I think.
I think the Cuse will do good this yr.Just asking too much in 1st game.

pt1guard,I loved the diamond-one and used it many times. Also the triangle-2. I coached for 26 yrs and always played gimmick defenses.
Every practice we worked on it for 15 minuts. And when teams prepared for me they worked on attacking it for 3 hours.
But the box and one was my favorite.
But also the one position I had the hardest time boxing was a good pt gd. A 2,3,4 or 5 was easier to box.Pt gds esp.one that can shoot caused me mucho problems.

Bear, good to hear from you.Your Jets are looking pretty good and my Giants are hurt'in. GL
hello10,it's not a strong play though.Play it lightly. But I like Louisville -13 over Kentucky. Will capp it later in the week.

thanx BOX + One

thanx BOX + One

parlayed BYU to SD St.

lost my nfl tease

anyhow, as far as running the gimmick Ds, I agree, boxing a shooter (subpar athlete) always made sense to me and had great success with it ... I love to run and jump, and what I call "Bluff" fake the R&J and have opps pick up dribble or toss it in tuba section ...

this year, our school has Johnny (ex-sonic) Johnson's kid--Mitch (so.)--and another good one, Lyndale Burelson a jr. PG; look for these kids down the line ...

anyway, thanx again for BYU info

FWIW trev alberts claims Terps will blow out Irish ...

and another espn talking head called for MICH to beat UW badly ... I live in seattle and tho the Huskies have trouble on grass, they will put points up his year, Charles Frederick, Paul Arnold, Reggie Williams, Rich Alexis, Nate Robinson (a fr. this kid's unreal, 40" vert. best athlete Ive ever seen in Seattle) & Rock Alexander, anyhoo, these kids are talented and will all be drafted

take care,
pt1gard;)
