Outright plays (1pt):

Raphael Jacquelin to win 16/1 e.w. @ SkyBet, Paddy Power and UKBetting
Rather cautious of backing players who played in Qatar last week because of the travelling and particularly those in contention, but Jacquelin as shown already this season that he travels well. After finishing 5th and 2nd in the first two events of the year in South Africa, he played in Thailand in the Johnnie Walker Classic the following week and finished 4th. Coming off a 3rd place finish last week, there should be no question marks over his confidence, so hopefully he will prove again his travelling abilities.

Nick O'Hern to win 33/1 e.w. @ SkyBet, Bet365, Stan James, Paddy Power and Victor Chandler
No concerns over fatigue with O'Hern. He last played three weeks ago in the New Zealand PGA Championship. After some high finishes in February, including top-5s in his previous two starts, he was a little below par that week, but he is certainly one of the more able players on view this week. Having finished in the top-20 in the last two years, he looks set to contend again this week and he yet close out the deal.

Thomas Levet to win 40/1 e.w. @ Paddy Power, Victor Chandler, UKBetting and BetDirect
Hopefully two poor weeks in the Middle East will not have taken too much out of Levet as he started 2004 in very good form. He followed a top-20 finish in the Heineken Classic with 3rd place finishes in the ANZ Championship and the Malaysian Open. If he can recapture that form, then he is certainly someone who can close out an event when presented with the opportunity.

Matchup plays (1pt unless stated):

Peter Fowler to beat Peter O'Malley +100 @ William Hill and Easybets [2pts]
Both have missed their last three cuts, so this could be decided by Friday. But in their six common events since the New Zealand Open in January, O'Malley has finished ahead of Fowler only once and that was not when the European Tour was last in Asia for the Johnnie Walker Classic. Pinnacle offer only -135 on Fowler, so they are also very clear on who the favourite should be.
(also available at Pinnacle, Aces, Paddy Power, Sirbet and SkyBet)

Marcus Fraser to beat Peter O'Malley -111 @ Centrebet [2pts]
Against O'Malley's record of missing the cut in the two Middle East events, Fraser finished in the top-30 each time. He also finished in the top-20 in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand, so this should be an easy win for the player who won three times last year.

Marcus Fraser to beat Carl Schwartzel -110 @ BlueSq [2pts]
Opposing Schwartzel once again. As a player who does not play well outside Southern Africa, he did rather well to finish in the top-30 in each of the Middle East events, but he is still a long way from winning on this Tour as his opponent has done. Fraser has finished ahead of Schwartzel in four of six common events this year, including the Jonnie Walker Classic, and is simply a much better prospect on this Tour.

Paul McGinley to beat Jyoti Randhawa -115 @ Centrebet [2pts]
Missing the cut last week in Qatar will be of benefit to McGinley this week and so is of little concern. If he can produce any of the form that saw him finish 12th in the Malaysian Open and 2nd in the Dubai Desert Classic, then he will be a real contender this week. If McGinley is on form, he will beat Randawa many more times than not.

Paul McGinley to beat Nobuhito Sato -125 @ William Hill and Easybets
If missing the cut in Qatar was a benefit in terms of preparing and travelling for this event, then finishing 2nd in a very tight event is certainly not the ideal preparation. I would expect a sluggish start from the Japanese player and he can't afford to give McGinley a head start.

Look for players who are acclimatised in the far eastern weather. The greens in Singapore are very grainy, and not to everyones taste, so players who have done well out in Singapore in the past have a distinct advantage. It may well be won by a local unknown player who is more used to playing in these conditions.

The fairways are very narrow, which means our players need to be accurate drivers, and as with any player who is hoping to win a tournament, plenty of putts must be made, especially on this course par 3's.

Anders Hansen, 25/1, Stan James, 1.5 pt E/W

Nick O'Hern, 33/1, SkyBet, 1 pt E/W

Mardan Mamat, 150/1, Stan James, 0.5 pt E/W

Thaworn Wiratchant, 125/1, SkyBet, 0.25 pt E/W

Nick O'Hern to beat Thomas Levet, 9/10, Stan James, 1 Point

Have to oppose Levets two missed cuts here with a course record holder, and a player who should go very well.

WOW! It was 5:33 p.m. CST when it occurred to me that this tourney was probably already underway, and I had only put in about 1/2 my wagers and hadn't finished capping. FWIW, with 12 frantic minutes to wrap things up, I went with the following @ Bet365:

Jacquelin(14/1) for 0.50* e.w.
Marksaeng(28/1) for 0.40* e.w,
Ignacio Garrido(125/1) for 0.40* e.w.

Supplement: Jacquelin on his website lists sun among his likes and rain and wind among his dislikes, which is consistent with relishing some hot and stifling conditions in Asia. I have conflicting thoughts on the likelihood of his getting off on the right foot on Thursday, but if he punches that ticket, it will land him right back in the fray in which his play this year earns marks of distinction from me (except for the closing stages of the S.A. Open), notwithstanding the fact he has failed to either get or make the decisive bit of fortune that could have easily landed him a title by now . . . Marksaeng rose right close to the next level while carrying my cash in Kuala Lumpur, and his chance to show his ability or inability in the closing stages couldn't withstand the shockwaves that a hole-in-one sent through the field . . . Garrido shows up on the basis of an inkling coming from last week, strong enough on my radar despite the coming scrutiny of a venue that demands some precision, enriched by a surprising 23rd in Stan's ratings, and a ticking clock when it came to my pulling the trigger, and all that directed me, after last week's dividend, to follow my bliss with my instincts for a longshot I liked, instead of breaking it down with a safer batch of more likely suspects; Garrido laying a turd this week would really surprise me, but I suspect his chances of finishing in the money positions will actually be enhanced if he doesn't emerge too soon from the fringes of contention.

As for the fun stuff, I went with Leaney/Garrido, Campbell/Jacquelin, Marksaeng/Frazer, and Leaney/Pe.Lawrie.

Nice call LIA :)

Outrights - Final update: 1-2; +1.63pts

Jacquelin mc
O'Hern 3rd
Levet 11th

Another place win from O'Hern secured the profit, but a very open event. Levet had been 2nd after the 1st round and 4th after the 3rd round, but less said about his 2nd and 4th rounds the better! Also passed over top-ranked Monty and took Jacquelin even though he was not at better odds. Such is hindsight!

Matchups - Final update: 1-4-0; -7.72pts

Fowler/O'Malley LOST by 11
Fraser/O'Malley LOST by 3
Fraser/Schwartzel LOST by
McGinley/Randhawa LOST by 9
McGinley/Sato WON by 3

Not a good week to double-up on Fraser and McGinley; they both fell just on the wrong side of the cut line, while Fowler posted a 80 on Saturday to turn a winning position into defeat.

Davidoff Tour ytd
Outrights - 4-5; +20.01pts
Matchups - 8-8; -4.85pts

LIA - Well called on Montgomerie - I wouldn't have thought the old guy had it in him - as he said post match, he actually reveals in the heat - another revelation. And Mr. Hanrahan - another guy who just wasn't on the radar. This is shaping up to be my worst week this year - we all get them - never nice - but looking forward to the next week already!
