Here is my .02, I bought the Palm VII when it first came out and then bought an IPAQ a few months later. I aslo travel alot but for me the IPAQ blows away the palm, here are a few reasons:
IPAQ is re-chargable, Palm is not - had to replace the batteries in the Palm at least every two weeks. When the batteries in the Palm hurled and were not replaced you basically have to reconfig the whole system including reinstalling all loaded apps. Found that out @ the airport one day.
IPAQ auto syncs when it is put in the cradle, Palm was manual
IPAQ is a color screen, Palm VII was not
IPAQ has the abilty to view MS docs out of the box, Palm needs a PQI.
IPAQ plays MP3 files....great for long flights when your laptop batteries need to be replaced.
IPAQ is a bit bigger, but I carry mine in my laptop bag and not in my pocket so this was not an issue.
As far a price they were pretty much the same, Palm East has already closed up shop, Palm West is not ready as of yet but in the current economy who knows. Since HP & Compaq merged I think the support has been OK, palm support just sucked IMHO. I looked @ the handsprings also, I just liked the IPAQ - bought mine 1.5 years ago and have not had a problem at all.
