For those that were not already aware Canbet sent an e-mail to all clients to advise they are going to recommence taking bets on Australian Sports. Here is what they had to say:

========================================

Aussie Sports Return!

Australian sports are back on the Canbet betting agenda. From this week we are again offering wagers on the AFL and NRL competitions. Our decision follows the Federal Parliament excluding race and sports
betting from the bans that will apply to other forms of interactive gambling.

Defeating the government in this way was a great victory for the thousands of Canbet and other punters who contacted their MPs and Senators to voice their disapproval of the original legislation. We apologise for being off the net with Australian sports since early April but in reality it was a small price to pay to stop us being forced out of business altogether.

Cartman:

I'm a client of Canbet (love them), but I haven't received such an email...not as yet anyway.

This appears to be good news. I take it this means casino type games will be banned, but sports wagering will be allowed to continue as it has been? Didn't know there was a danger of losing that priviledge. I take it I'm safe in leaving my account open with them?

Any info you have on the political climate in Australia surrounding sports wagering would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-dc

DC,

This basically sums up the situation. When the original Internet Gaming Ban was proposed it was going to stop online gaming (casinos) and online wagering (sports and horse racing). There was a fairly large outcry in Australia that there is a big difference between online gaming (casinos) and online wagering (sports and horse racing). It did seem laughable that you could pick up the phone to place a bet yet they didn't want anyone to use that same phone line to do it via the Internet.

I really like Canbet as well and believe they are a solid book that offer very fair lines/odds. I did lose plenty of respect for them when they stopped taking bets on Australian sports (especially when no other books took this action), but at least they have done the right thing now.

I also received an e-mail from DAS and it appears that once the amended Internet Gaming Ban goes through it will have an impact on "live betting", although I don't believe Canbet do this anyway.

I would not have any concerns about leaving funds with any Australian book. The regulatory requirements are such that your money is as safe as it can be.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the informative reply, Cartman. I'm glad the good citizens of Australia spoke up...and even more glad their elected representatives listened.

I have to say, the government regulation played a big part in why I initially opened an account with them. As an added treat, when they were recruiting signups from the USA (this was a couple of years ago) they were also kind enough to send a genuine boomerang my way!

I have the lion's share of my "sports wagering investement funds" with them. It's good to know that it sounds like I'll be able to play there well into the foreseeable future.

Thanks again,

-dc
