CHAPEL HILL - Jason Capel's headaches haven't completely gone away, and they're just feeding the migraine that North Carolina's entire basketball situation is giving coach Matt Doherty.
Capel, who has missed two games because of a concussion he suffered in practice, has not practiced since Jan. 15 and probably won't play against N.C. State at 9 tonight in the Smith Center.
What's more, starting guard Jackie Manuel will miss the State game because of a stress reaction in his left foot, Doherty said Tuesday.
"It's discouraging," freshman forward Jawad Williams said. "We feel like we can't get a break."
The Tar Heels (5-10, 1-4 ACC) have lost five games in a row for the first time in 50 years, and must beat the Wolfpack (14-4, 4-2) to avoid being six games under .500 for the first time in the program's 92 years.
Capel, who will be re-evaluated again today, will be allowed to play if cleared by UNC's medical staff, Doherty said.
"How effective he'll be, it would be tough, because he wouldn't have practiced in a week," Doherty said. "But if the doctors say that he can play without any risk, I'd put him out there as long as he was willing to play. Knowing Jason, he'd be willing to do it."
Capel, who is averaging 16.8 points and 10.3 rebounds, was cleared to shoot and ride a stationary bike for the first time at practice Tuesday. He was not allowed to travel with the team last week to Florida State or Connecticut.
Manuel, who is averaging 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds, won't dress tonight and will be re-evaluated later in the week, Doherty said. UNC athletic trainer Marc Davis said it's difficult to predict how long Manuel will be out with this type of injury, a strain of the third metatarsal on his left foot.
The Tar Heels will play Sunday at Clemson.
"My foot's been bothering me for a while -- on the bottom of my foot," Manuel said Tuesday. "And Sunday, it started hurting on the top. It's kind of strange."
Williams, who started in Capel's place in losses to FSU and UConn, probably will start again tonight. Sophomore shooting guard Brian Morrison is the likeliest candidate to replace Manuel. But before practice Tuesday, Doherty said he had not yet selected a starting five.
"I have in my head what I would foresee as a lineup if we were to play tonight," Doherty said. "But I have to see how practice goes today."
Doherty said he's looking for a key characteristic for his new lineup: toughness. He said his team didn't show much of that in an 86-54 blowout at UConn.
"I want to see who steps up and who's tough enough," Doherty said. "To me, toughness is a huge issue. It really hurts me at times to say we weren't tough enough, because that's something that you should bring to the table every day, every game, every practice."
