Anyone out there know much about car tires?

My wifes car has 225/50zr17 on it. For some reason I see that z in it cost me more money than if it wasn't on the tire. Does anyone know if that's something her tire has to be or are there options?

its a speed rating. Punch your specs ino a tire site on the internet. You may have other speed rating options

I just talked to a guy at tirerack.com and he said I didn't nee the Z, I could just go with the R.
