Cards RB Jones suffers broken hand at his home

SportsTicker

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) - The Arizona Cardinals can't even escape injuries off the field.

The team announced on Saturday that leading rusher Thomas Jones suffered a broken right hand at his home and will be lost for the remainder of the season.

It is yet another blow for the Cardinals, who have lost leading receiver David Boston, returner-receiver MarTay Jenkins and starting tackle Anthony Clement to season-ending injuries over the last few weeks.

Jones' injury occurred when he banged the back of his hand on the edge of a countertop as he reached for the telephone on Friday night. He will be examined by a hand specialist next week prior to undergoing surgery.

The nature of Jones' fluke injury is especially frustrating for the Cardinals (4-6), who have lost four straight after getting off to a surprising 4-2 start.

The seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft, Jones started all nine games he played in this season, rushing for 511 yards and two touchdowns on 138 carries and catching 20 passes for 113 yards. He rushed for a career-high 173 yards in a September 15 win at Seattle.

Second-year player Marcel Shipp was being phased into the running game by coach Dave McGinnis and will now take over as the feature back. He has rushed for 360 yards and three touchdowns on 69 carries, an average of 5.2 yards per carry.
