Manager Tony La Russa said this afternoon he hoped to give third baseman David Freese a rest until Friday in Arizona, save for possible pinch-hitting assignments, after Freese rolled his right ankle running the bases on Saturday.

Felipe Lopez will be at third base tonight in the series finale against Milwaukee, with Brendan Ryan at shortstop and switch-hitting Aaron Miles at second against Brewers lefthander Manny Parra.

Ryan will hit second tonight and Ryan Ludwick will move from second fifth, as La Russa said he wanted to protect cleanup man Matt Holliday with Ludwick now that Freese is out.

La Russa is leaning heavily toward starting Blake Hawksworth at Los Angeles on Monday night, instead of rookie P.J. Walters, but that depended on whether or not Hawksworth, who has been in the bullpen all season, had to be used tonight.?We?re trying to win tonight?s game first,? said L a Russa. Walters would stay in the bullpen where he has been available for the last couple of days.
