What do you guys think about this fight?

Carwin +145
Gonzaga -175

My first inclination is too load up on Gonzaga. Carwin hasn't beaten anyone, but he has crushed everyone he's faced. Carwin may be a muscle-neck, but it sounds like he has solid wrestling in his background. I think Gonzaga is still one of the best in the heavyweight class, but he hasn't been the same since his loss to Couture.

I'll probably lay off, but this fight really appeals to me.

Gonzaga IMO has as much talent overall as anyone except for a few of the very top guys. He has good stand up, ground and pound is good and his bjj is good. Problem is he doens't have much of a tank and more importantly to me he doesn't seem to have a ton of will power. I think Randy broke him and I don't like seeing fighters broken. Carwin has been a beast but this is definitely a step up. I'm also looking very forward to this fight.

i agree with everything Lay says. Zaga at times looks like the best fighter in the world but after Randy it is if he has a tendency to quit when he feels he might be in for a tough night. He is like betting Golata in boxing. You never know what u are gonna get:shrug:

i don't expect gonzaga will ever be mentally durable. in his 1st fight with werdum he got tired and then had the tables turned on him. i don't think it was just fatigue though, i think he lacked the heart to continue.

i see carwin as the type of fighter that can put a lot of opponents in a difficult spot and once in a difficult spot i don't see gonzaga coming back.

i'm probably going to take a chance on carwin.

I won't touch this fight with a 10-foot pole.

Carwin is HUGE, great wrestler, and is now a part of the Jackson camp... he's gotten off to a fast start in MMA; we don't know a thing about his conditioning yet b/c all his fights have ended quickly. His bread and butter is to get full mount and rain down the punches.......

Gonzaga is one of the few high-level BJJ black belts at heavyweight. He is capable of fighting off his back, unlike Carwin's other opponents... and it's unlikely Carwin will get full mount on Gonzaga.

I dont lean either way to be honest -- no clue who wins this fight. I thinks it's very ballsy of Gonzaga to take this fight, because Carwin is very dangerous, but not yet a big name. That, along with the fact Gonzaga didnt do so well against the last great wrestler he faced (Couture).

i have a feeling if it goes past the first,we`ll see comedy gold.....

maybe carwin has cardio, but somehow i doubt it with his build....and we`ve seen gonzaga fade in tough fights....

still,i agree with gmro,a really intriguing match-up....i`m sure at least the first round will be hell on wheels...like to see a distance prop...

good matchmaking...a little surprised that carwin is taking this chance so early on....

where`s heath herring?...lol

That is exactly why no way in the world i would take Gonzaga. Done with fighters who have that quit option in their game or the mental breakdown game plan option. I saw Weasel take Manny G a card or two ago and i was thinking of jumping on but that fight with Emerson (i think) where Manny now thought he was a boxer stuck in my crawl. I was still gonna take a chance but now i see the weigh in and Manny has fifteen articles of clothing on. I know its a strange reason to back off a bet but what idiot would wear all this clothing to a weigh in? That put an end for me about thinking about betting Manny. Weasel i was gonna mention this to you about Manny at the weigh in but i figured u might laugh me out of the thread lol. Plus the thought of me taking someone off of a winner doesn't sit well with me.

Carwin all the way. I really think Carwin and Cain are 2 future stud HW's for the UFC, diamonds in the rough.

I've never been impressed with Gonzaga. He has no heart or cardio. Sure, he knocked out Cro Cop with a leg kick, great...that was a long time ago, what else have you done?

After watching some film on Carwin u guys can have him. He looks way to easy to hit. His mounting ability looks world class but then again are these three stiff i just watched? I'll pass on this one. Anyone know anything about his beard? 1 guy when the going gets tough he seems to pack it in and the other looks to easy to hit. I don't see much athleticism there either like what u see with Brock. He looks like a bull in a china shop. Kick loves betting these type of bulls. Like that Ryan ford character or the Melvin Maloof guy. Oh and of course they have to be the underdog:mj07: They just rely on brute strength

I'll take two on Gonzaga.

It's a fight anything can happen, especially with a guy like Carwin but I still like Zaga.

You know I'm kind of agreeing with you Sponge. If he doesn't go straight to the ground he might be in big trouble. He's VERY stiff on his feet. If it does go to the ground he could be in big trouble there as well. It's hard to tell how these wrestling guys will handle a high level BJJ guy. I'm not sure Gonzaga will need much of a gas tank or heart in this fight. Gonzagas loss to Werdum was bad and I admit it but still the loss wasn't to a stiff. Then you have the loss to Randy, it's hard to jump on a guy to much for losing there. I'm not saying he's one of the best but he's got some skill. I know a few things about this fight. Standing Gonzaga will own him and on the ground if Carwin makes any mistakes he'll be tapped quick. This could be a very friendly line. I'm going to watch it up until a few hours before fight time. If it drops then I'm staying away, if it stays the same or goes up just a little then I think I may play some on Gonzaga.

To me this looks easy to take Gonzaga but you just can't trust him. If Carwin gets him down and starts mauling him does he just call it a day? Sad cause the guy really has some talent in my opinion. We should put up all the fights like this one. Good idea by my pal Gary. Instead of him just bitching in every thread he puts up. This one is a nice one :mj07:

Anyone else think Carwin is a bit smaller these days? He's still a big guy but he's not as BIG as he was. I always look at shoulders (on white guys) and when they're not as big and round it makes me wonder. His chest also doesn't look as big, it's flattened out some.

He's not even close to as big as he was.... somebody here posted his before & after photos a while back.

He went from BEAST to Body by Jake.
