Nithtjanitor alluded to this in the Witter thread so I wanted to start a new one about it. I was all over Casa when he fought Santa Cruz. I know most in here jumped on that one and Xmas arrived early for all of us with that gift. I swore I'd never wager him again after the santa cruz fight but there may be an opportunity looming here. I saw Kits fight twice now and he's an exciting fighter but I honestly believe there is more hype than substance on this guy. He can bang a little but certainly not w/devastating power. I thought the fight w/csar was a little bogus in that they allowed it to continue w/that hidious cut. That fight would have been stopped 9 of 10 times anywhere else...the cut was that bad. The ordinary Csar had some moments in that one. I wasn't nearly as impressed as the HBO crew that was hyping the kid. He's a tough blood and guts white kid that's exciting to watch...does that remind anybody of another overhyped HBO favorite? IF Casa has anything left in the tank, he can beat this kid. The question is whether or not Casa is shot. He may very well be after looking horrendous v Santa Cruz. The line has steadily been widening in Kats favor. Night janitor said he heard or read that Kat has been looking crappy in sparring sessions. I'm not going to pull the trigger just yet but I'd like to get some comments on it.

Here the piece by the way

-----

I asked Reyes how Gabi?s been looking in sparring.

?Really good, very sharp,? he replied. ?He went under Michael Katsidis?s legs while sparring with him last week.?

Huh?

Katsidis, the undefeated WBO ?interim? lightweight title holder, is scheduled to challenge The Ring?s 135-pound champ Joel Casamayor in an HBO-televised bout from the Morongo Casino on March 22nd.

The freakishly strong Australian of Greek descent has been training in Southern California and sparring at the Wild Card, where Roger ?Speedy? Gonzalez and Gabi have reportedly been giving him quality rounds.

The naturally smaller fighters are doing so well from their southpaw stances that more than a few observers at the Wild Card give the aging but still crafty Cuban a decent shot at winning the fight.

?He?s a brawler,? Paul Mayorquin, one of Roach?s assistants, said of Katsidis. ?His fight is definitely on the inside because he has so much power ? his strength is unbelievable ? but it?s clear to me that he?s not used to boxers or southpaws at all. If Casamayor can keep moving and keep the fight on the outside, he?ll beat him.?

Mayorquin, a former pro lightweight who was trained my Roach in the mid-to-late ?90s, appreciates the aggressive nature of Katsidis, but believes the self-styled gladiator could go about his pressuring tactics with more defensive technique.

He pointed out the manner in which Roach, who celebrated his 48th birthday Wednesday, worked the mitts with his fighters.

?See how he backs up and gets them to punch and move their head as they come forward?? Mayorquin asked. ?Freddie teaches smart pressure.?

-----

Little Filipino bantamweight Diosdado ?Prince? Gabi has been sparring with Michael Katsidis at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles.

Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez said he watched Gabi spar with Katisidis and said the Filipino ?went in there and was doing very, very well.?

I subscribed to Maxboxing yesterday 50/yr but haven?t browsed it, there might be video links to the sessions or a more in-depth explanation, I?ll check it out. I'm interested to see if either got hit clean with a power punch and how they took it. The line has been steadily rising as you noted, and Casa lines could get better by Saturday. There?s a few people I?m waiting to hear from before recommending anything. Time is on our side here.

Never saw this Kastidis either. Joel I have seen MANY times. True, I'd say he looked horrible last time out. Lethargic/listless/slow. He does have incredible experience/background. In the olympics-professional ranks. Yes, more information and insight would be good. Price is leaking up on the kid so it could be good or bad. Wonder why it's moving though? Smart money or what? I sure as hell am not making a move unless someone comes in here with a strong opinion with solid reasoning.

Casymaoyer has always been a very unpredictable fighter. He looked terrific at times (Corrales) and then again very dissapointing (Kid Diomand, Cruz).

I think he knows what's on the line, he wont have the same amount of ringrust...I think he can do a lot better.

Katsidis though might be destined to fill in the spot of Gatti...

I have a gut feeling that Katsidis will win a borderline controversial decision.

casa may be over the hill....but,he`s coming off two fights vs guys that are pretty close to 4 inches taller than he is......

the last coming off a year layoff.....

if you like casamayor, looks like he`s got the perfect foil here...an aggressive, somewhat rough around the edges brawler......

casamayor may be through...i don`t know...but there`s no height differential here...and he has a recent, tough fight vs a tall, awkward opponent who`s style is tough for casamayor under his belt......as a counterpuncher, you have to get inside when you`re at that much of a disadvantage...negating what you`re good at(letting you`re guy come to you and countering)....it`s not that easy when you have to be somewhat aggressive to get past a 4 inch height disadvantage to paydirt....

IF.....someone were going to take casamayor vs some young hotshot, this would be the style/height/pigment(lol) you`d want him to face....

i`m good for a wager at 2-1...

I agree gw, great post. From the forums I've visited, Casamayor is gaining support. Even at non-betting forums there have been intelligent predictions for Casa to win, regardless of the lines.

btw if you haven't seen Katsidis fight, download his fight vs Amonsot, it's informative and extremely entertaining. Looked like an early FOTY candidate. I'm glad I saw what can happen to Kat's eyes..

What do you guys think of the props? They've opened on 5d, I don't see anything worthwhile. Casamayor decision will probably be popular at +380, but I don't rule out a stoppage on cuts, I'd rather just take Casa straight.

I wanted to make a small play on Kat inside in case Casa is really washed up, but +185 isn't good enough for me.

btw Kat decision is +180 and Casa inside is +530.

I don't see much value. Disagree?

An opinion from a guy I know here, who boxed, says he sees Kat outworking Casa. Did'nt say KO or anything, but he says go with Kat. I am doing so based on his analysis. He says down the road, Lazcano is MADE for Hatton. Price on Ricky SU is prohibitive, so I don't know where to go with this.

well,i guess he`s better than a 2-1 fave vs a champion for a reason...

i caught casa at +195 and just think given the styles,he has a shot....and the odds are favorable....

again,i wish i`d seen kats. fight...i`m flying blind here...

g.l.,though...thanks for the info...

for what it`s worth, the local guys i talk to that know the game(actually,2 guys...lol)both think that katsidis will outwork casa to a decision win....

not much casa sentiment out there...and to be honest, casa wasn`t terribly impressive in fights priotr to the santa cruz/corrales fights...

i was liking my 2-1 dog play..maybe my not seeing katsidis makes it not such a smart move....he is 36...and that`s in "cuban years"....:SIB

looking at any props...i`m gonna put a fin or a 10 spot on the draw prop...in casa`s last 8 fights he`s seen 4 split decisions and a draw....that`s pretty amazing..
