talk to the higher ups and they will set you free. i have nextel now, but couple years ago i canceled them and they wanted to charge me to get out. i ended up making some bs story of how my service and quailty hasn't been great and that i wasn't told about it. took about a week, but i got aout of it.

Sorry but I don't think I can be much help with this. I work on the site design side of the industry and that is more of a customer service/legal issue. KDogg's idea is best, because the squeeky wheel does usually get the greese. I would play up that the service was unreliable and inadequate for your needs. I'll ask around but I'm not sure how strict each carrier is with enforcing this policy.

I have been fighting AT&T Wireless for about 4 months now. I HATE this ****ing company. Basically, what I found out is that they do not easily waive cancellation fees. My service has absolutely sucked with this company over the last 6-7 months, and I have had to call for corrections on my bill each of the last 5 months. When I asked about cancellation, they said it was going to be a $175 per phone (me and my wife) fee. This went through three tiers of people, so I guess they won when I hung up pissed. I can't believe how terrible their customer relations is, but I guess they are making more money than my company so they must be doing something right.

Getting much of anything out of AT&T wireless these days is tough, considering they have been bought by Cingular and most of the AT&T employees are quite uncertain as to their future. Had to deal with a few of their people (who were great people by the way just in a terrible position and in a state of limbo) and they honestly don't seem to care what gets done right now. My thought is they'll continue to give you the run around because in a few months you won't be their customer anyway and they'll let Cingular deal with the problem.

Wish I could help you guys out with better answers but I just lease rooftop space and build the sites and don't have any insight on the corporate policy. My gut feeling is that even though you signed a contract they aren't going to sue you over $175 bucks if you refuse to pay, but don't take my word for it. The intentions of the surcharge is so that people aren't jumping from carrier to carrier every month depending on who's got the better deal, which is understandable.

SEND A CONSUMER PROTECTION INTENT TO SUE LETTER TO THE COMPANY IF ALL ELSE FAILS. ONLY DO THIS AS A LAST MEANS. AT THAT JUNCTURE YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO LOSE AND THE LETTER WILL GET THE ATTENTION OF THE PROPER PEOPLE. SAY SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT THEY ENGAGE IN DECPETIVE AND MISLEADING ACTS REGARDING SERVICE, HIDDEN CHARGES ETC. ...AND AS A RESOLUTION OF THE MATTER PRIOR TO APPEARING IN COURT ETC. YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO SETTLE IF THEY LET YOU OUT OF YOUR CONTRACT. WORTH A SHOT ...

If you have a list of issues where your carrier has fail to deliver their end of your deal, go to the highest exec you can.
I wouldn't mess with cust. svc., they are tough,,but go to a store and find out who their boss's boss is and start there,,saying
"if you don't let me out, I will write a letter to the local newspaper and go to a tv station to one of those consumer-watch segments"
If you have a list of their failures, and you get to the right person,,you should have some luck.
Best of luck

I have to bump this thread after the 2 hours of BS I went through tonight. Made some simple changes to my plan with Verizon tonight. Switched to some Motorola v60p phones. Had to get seperate plans for all three lines on my plan which will cost me close to 50 more per month. Also, they said they HAD to extend my contract on EACH phone for 1 year. I've been on this same plan for four years and its always something, some fu/cking problem with these assholes from Verizon - I said go ahead and do it I'm calling your corporate offices tomorrow to tell them about this BS experience and if I want to cancel this plan **ANYTIME** I should be able to after being with you for this long. As far as I'm concerned they can take their cancellation fee and higher fees and shove them up their ass if I get fed up one more time with this BS company.

right there is what bites you.....you go buy new phones at a discounted rate that require a year of service on contract. buy your phones from another source and pay full price (best buy for example) and you aren't bound by any contracts.

Dude you SOL...My mother had a stroke last March and can't even use the phone. I went through alot of people and so called highers. I even said I would fax proof of her condition. They (cingular) told me that the only way to get out of it is if you are in the military. Unreal. The bad thing aobut it was that the difference of keeping the phone was less than cancellation fees involved.

good luck

Well,

I'll be calling them tomorrow about their lack of customer service - 2 hrs is ridiculous and I WILL GET OUT OF THIS IF they are ASSES. I will just tell them about my experience with them and btw, I got the phones off ebay pretty cheap, think they were just trying to screw me. Either way, they said I could always revert back to my old plan, but I ain't having that contract screw me.

I'll give updates tomorrow;)

if you got the phones on your own off e-bay (unless it was from their company) there should be NO WAY there is a mandatory contract time....you may need to pay a $10 per month additional fee or something for not having a contract, but holding you to a certain number of years is total BS

Got 2 BRAND NEW phones w/retail price of $199 each for FREE. My original contract was up in November of 2005, got extended out to Jan 2006. So with this *perk* I really don't care, verizon did okay by me. Sometimes you just got to go to the higher ups if you're being taken advantage of.

First find out what part of the US they DO NOT have service in. Then call them and tell them you are moving out of state. In my state they cannot legally charge you a cancellation fee.

Had a few friends who had to do this. Just do it over the companies 1-800 number so you dont have to run into a pushy saleman working on commission.

Thought I would add something since I do work for a telecommunications company. Most people buy phones at a discount in return for keeping their service for X amount of time. If you leave before that....Yes you do pay the termination fee. In regards to moving out of state well thats your problem....not the company that gave you the discount on the phones. You are aware of the coverage area and your time commitment.

trampled, what about the horse $hit, adding a year to your contract everytime you alter your plan ? i have easily fulfilled my original contract i agreed to , but due to adding /subtracting minutes/changing plan due to travel ect. - my contract was adjusted to last until nov 2006. this was never mentioned to me until i called to cancel service. :cursin:
