Cell phone/service question

I confess I know little about cell phone service/plans, etc. My question:

I have to change cell phone service providers due to moving to an area that T-Mobile just doesn't reach. Verizon is the dominant carrier here, and that's what I need to go with. I love my HTC phone that I got from T-Mobile. Will that phone possibly work with a Verizon plan? Meaning can I just switch providers and not have to buy a new smartphone?

I know I can ask Verizon, but thought I'd try to educate myself before I get sucked in when talking to them. I have to have a dependable phone since I'm coaching and we travel pretty far on the bus some nights and need to be able to make phone calls in case of a problem. That, and I want to be connected with civilization, too, and I get no service at all inside my school, and very little access at home.

Verizon and T-Mobile work with different frequencies and technologies. It is safe to assume it won't work on both but to be 100% sure you'd need to post the phone model.

The iPhone 4s could work on both carriers, but that is not the norm, there might be some HTC phones that can do it too but most of the times they come out with different versions for the different carriers.

very doubtful that the old phone would work on verizon. However, HTC makes products for verizon and being a new customer to verizon you can probably snag a great, great deal on a new one.
