With CSKA Moscow's UEFA Cup hopes hanging by a thread, Valeri Gazzaev believes that Russia have thrown his team a lifeline.

The veteran manager's side lie on just one point, but they have the chance to keep their hopes alive tonight with a win over PSV Eindhoven in Moscow, and he feels that the Russian national side's recent successes can spur them on.

"Our Russian internationals are in great spirits too, so the psychological level is high," he told UEFA.com.

"Everybody is ready to play these last two matches of our campaign at a high level."

However, his optimism is tempered by disappointment.

"Our goal was to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League, and we have failed to do that," he bitterly noted.

"However, we still have a chance to play in the UEFA Cup so my players will be sufficiently motivated. They are professionals and we're preparing very seriously."

PSV would seal their own UEFA Cup passage at the very least with a draw over the Army side, but they'll be looking for a win. Indeed, should other results go their way, they could even still be in with a chance of reaching the next stage.

However, their new coach, Jan Wouters, must travel to frozen Moscow with injury worries on his mind.

He sighed, I"t's always hard to be without important players, so we'll have to see how to fill that gap," said Wouters

"Everyone realises this is an important match. If we win, we'll see what happens next, but in this group anyone can take points off anyone else.

"CSKA are a great team with three very good strikers. They play good football off the wings and behind that they have a strong defensive block. It will be very hard."

Simons Out Of PSV's Moscow Odyssey PSV Eindhoven captain Timmy Simons will not be taking part in his side's trip to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League midweek...
PSV Eindhoven Captain Timmy Simsons will miss his side's Tuesday clash with CSKA Moscow.

The Boeren left for the Russian capital without him today as he recovers from a persistent back problem that kept him out of his side's 4-1 win over Excelsior in Rotterdam.

Carlos Salcido will serve as stand-in skipper for this game, although Simons' absence will complicate matters for the Eindhoven outfit, who need a win in order to keep their slim hopes of qualification intact.

CSKA, meanwhile, cannot advance to the next round as they languish on a single point, but a convincing win would put them within touching distance of the UEFA Cup place, which PSV currently occupy.

Simons, 30, has been ever-present in the Champions League group stage so far this season, and had taken part in all Eredivisie games until missing that clash with Excelsior at the weekend.

With just six minutes to go before the interval visitors PSV take the lead as Dirk Marcellis raids down the right and sees his cross take a wicked deflection up in the air off Sergei Ignashevich. Jefferson Farf?n is the first to react to the dropping ball and less than a metre from goal the Peruvian striker is able to nod the ball into the net.
