Championship Weekend

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

You probably won?t hear the old Vanessa Williams song ?Save the Best for Last? at a college football game but it seems the song is apropos for the NCAA?s last weekend of football. It?s championship weekend, schools are craving conference championships and bettors are hoping to head into bowl season on a winning note.

The three Championship matchups receiving the most attention from sports bettors are the Big 12, the SEC and the ACC, in that order.

- The ACC?s final game is one of three games on Saturday that feature two Top 25 teams going head-to-head. Taking place in Jacksonville, Florida, the battle will see the Virginia Tech Hokies (No. 6 in the BCS) and the Boston College Eagles (BCS No. 11) fighting it out for the title and a possible BCS bowl berth.

Both the Hokies and the Eagles sport identical 6-5 records against the spread, but bettors are putting their money behind Virginia Tech (4?-point favs) as they are seeing 75% of the money wagered.

- The SEC Championship will see the Louisiana State Tigers (No. 7 BCS) and the Tennessee Volunteers (No. 14 BCS) heading to Atlanta. The Tigers are still smarting from an untimely loss to Arkansas on Thanksgiving long weekend where they failed to cover as a 13-point favorite in a 50-48 triple OT loss that tossed cold water on LSU?s BCS title aspirations.

Despite having a stout overall straight up record of 10-2 record, LSU?s 5-7 ATS record is not impressive, while the 9-3 Vols are a profitable 8-4 ATS. SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Tigers listed as a 7?-point favorite and they are the team bettors have tabbed as their favorite as well, with 65% of the action going LSU?s way.

- The final conference championship game on the sked is also the one with the biggest implications. The Oklahoma Sooners and the Missouri Tigers will battle for the Big 12 Championship in San Antonio.

The Tigers knocked off then No. 2 Kansas 36-28 as a 1-point underdog last week, a victory that pole-vaulted Mizzou into the top spot in the BCS standings and gives them a good shot at the BCS championship game?a win against OU and they?re in.

Last week Oklahoma beat cross-state rival Oklahoma State as a 13?-point favorite in a 49-17 thrashing and are currently ranked ninth in the BCS standings.

The Tigers are not only ranked higher than the Sooners but have been a solid play for bettors all season, boasting a very profitable 9-2 clip against the number. That said, Oklahoma is favored by a field goal.

If you?re looking at NCAA future odds, SPORTSBETTING.COM is listing Mizzou QB Chase Daniel at +400 to win the Heisman Trophy and has Missouri at +250 to win the BCS title.

In the biggest game of the NCAA weekend, the betting public is divided when it comes to who they think will cover the number. A slight majority think that Mizzou is the way to go, as 55% of the action is on the Tigers.

There is another big game this weekend that isn?t a Championship, this one involving the West Virginia Mountaineers. As well Ohio State is still in the mix for the BCS Championship, even though they are sitting at home in the final days of the season.

When the Ohio State Buckeyes lost to the Illinois Fighting Illini a few weeks back, analysts wrote of OSU?s chances at the BCS title. The Buckeyes would play Michigan before their season concluded and that wouldn?t be enough time to climb back up the BCS ladder, they argued.
Well guess what happened? Ohio State is still in the thick of the BCS championship hunt and up to two scenarios will possibly allow (final BCS standings permitting) the Buckeyes to punch tickets to Louisiana in early January?not for the Sugar Bowl either.

If the Missouri Tigers lose and drop in the standings, OSU could move up to the No. 2 spot in the BCS and a West Virginia loss would do wonders too.

On paper, there is no reason why the BCS? No. 2 team, the West Virginia Mountaineers, should lose to the Pitt Panthers this Saturday. The Mountaineers have a decided advantage over the Panthers with more talent and a better record?WVU is being listed as a massive favorite at -28?.

But unseeded teams have been taking down No. 2 ranked teams all season and it appears the betting public are in tune with this unusual trend, as it is the big underdog Pitt that is getting a majority of the action, seeing 60% of the betting volume.

As we?ve seen all season at the college level, you never know?..

Enjoy the last big weekend of NCAA football, but remember, it?s only three weeks until the Bowl games kick-off.
