I've been there several times on business and stayed on the bay ( or maybe a river runs through there too? Can't remember) and you can't beat the view. Also, please do yourself a big favor and eat at Halls Chophouse. The food there is so good it's worth flying in eating there and flying back worth every penny.

If you must go I would stay at Shem Creek Inn and go to ISLE OF PALMS for the beach.

Myrtle Beach and Wilmington have much prettier water to swim in.

the ocean water in Charleston is murky and brown and there are no waves

Good suggestion on the food. I wish I could remember the name of the place I liked so much (I did a quick search, and it was Magnolia's).

I would vote staying historic as well. Make sure you have uber/Lyft on your smartphones too in case u need rides.

Thank you all for the help..we booked the Hilton suites in downtown last nite...right in the middle of the historic district...staying 3 days...want to do Sumter , the carriage ride and see one of the plantations...would love to hit the beach for a few hours..how far is Isle of palms? ..the big question is..... do I rent a car....do I need a car...the hotel doesn't have service from the airport...airport is 9 miles away...and the hotel parking is almost $30 a day...what a rip off...I can get a car for $25 a day...with only 3 days don't need a lot of excursions and the beach would be nice but not necessary ..if I had more time would love to go to Myrtle Beach and hit the ocean...those restaurants magnolias and chophouse sound great...thank you for the suggestions...keep them coming...there is a minor league team there..have to look it up...but going to a double A minor league game might not go to well with my wife...is there a casino around...? thank you again...

Just now saw your thread.
We stayed at the Vendue Inn in the district. It is on the Bay, free parking ( back in 2001), free use of bicycles which is best way for exploring the district, great breakfasts and the best rooftop bar in Charleston since 2007. You definitely should be up there at sunset and post a few pictures. There were numerous coffee shops close by and Magnolia's is a short walk.
Friend of mine just returned from there and said it was very hot during the day.
If you rent a car head over to Sullivan's Island for lunch and let us know what you think of the old bridge. I will never go over it again when the wind is blowing.
Have a great trip.

Charlestown is not a beach town, its a vacation destination. Top notch restaurants and bar scenes.

Myrtle beach for the go - cart racing and the jersey shore air brush atmosphere.

Cool thing about Myrtle is you can drink alcohol on the beach and nobody is going to say anything and you can park wherever you want and not get a ticket or get towed.

But yeah Charleston is kinda cool it's just not a great place for beaches. The food in Charleston for the most part is really good. I highly recommend Fleets Landing to eat at.

I know someone who lives in Charleston and they have their own boat so they don't go to the beaches they just drive the boat out and park at some sort of private beaches/sandbars

Big Charleston fan- my take is you do not need a car, and I wouldn't really waste time going to the beach either. What makes Charleston great is that once you are at the hotel and in the historic part of town, everything is walkable. Shops, restaurants, etc. There's enough to keep you busy without the beach.

The usual tourist stops are great (Battery, city market, etc).

Lot and lots of good restaurants. It depends on what you want- Definitely get shrimp and grits somewhere. We've had super high end meals there and also hole in the walls- one of our favorite stops is Pearlz Oyster Bar. If you can score one of the tables on East Bay St- it's a great place to enjoy some beers and Oysters over the course of several hours.

Box, I was there for a few days 3 years ago with my wife. I prefer seafood so went to Hanks and Hymans both very good and they get packed. Hymans tables all have metal tags of all the famous people who sat there. I believe you need reservations for both and Hanks also has some type of farm table you can sit at with a buch of other people of your into that.

We went on the carriage ride, very cool. Locals get pissed when stuck behind and gave our lady driver the finger as she called it the one finger salute.

You can also take a cool boat ride tour which I'd recommend. I personally wouldn't worry about the beaches.

Have fun.

The only place to stay:

Shuttle that will take you to all the hot visitors
Spots. May sure to go to Reds on a Monday night
all you can eat crab legs. Google both can't go
wrong. Enjoy. May be listed as Charleston Place.

The traffic in Charleston is awful and the ocean water is brown like nasty river water

Good food though at Fleets Landing

But as far as beaches , the beaches just plain suck

Box,
A little local info......Pages Okra Grill is a great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner....easy on the wallet and great variety. It's close to Shem Creek. Sullivan's Island is where we go to the beach and it's closer than IOP....once you get to Sullivan's take a right and go down until you see Fort Moultrie on left. Right after you pass the fort take the first left (sand road/parking). You need to get there by 10 am for a good chance to park. Only about 40 yards to beach and you can see Fort Sumter in the distance. If you can't park there park across the street at welcome center. They have bathrooms there as well!
