Chasing Perfection

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

The 2007 version of the New England Patriots struck fear into the hearts of NFL teams and, in the first part of the season, bookmakers as well. They finished the regular season with a perfect 16-0 mark, with many of those victories falling into the category of ?beat-down?, as they really ran up the score when the opportunity presented itself.

While beating up on opposing tams, they were also inflicting serious wounds on the books, as they started out with a scorching 8-0 mark against the spread, covering huge double-digit lines many weeks. The betting public couldn?t get enough of Brady. Moss and crew, and the oddsmakers couldn?t hang a line high enough to entice some volume on their opponents.

But that old saying, ?what goes up, must come down? invariably rings true in today?s NFL and the Pats couldn?t escape it, at least in terms of covering the spread. New England finished the year on a 2-9 ATS run, including the playoffs.

Most notable of those ATS losses was their first straight up loss of the year, in the Super Bowl. But it was one hell of a run they had, coming so close to the perfect season, only to see it slip away in the final minutes with a New York TD.

After that lose to the Giants in the big game, many predicted it would be a long time before a team would flirt with an undefeated season, let alone an undefeated regular season schedule.

Well it?s a season later and although it is only the halfway point, so we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves, the most unlikely of teams is challenging the Pats and Dolphins? undefeated achievement.

Currently sitting at a perfect 7-0 straight up and an impressive 7-0 ATS, the Tennessee Titans are this year?s bettor?s dream, at least so far.

I don?t think there are too many people thinking this is a team built to take a real shot at the 16-0 mark, but they are heading for the mid-point looking pretty impressive. There are nine more opportunities in the regular season for the Titans to lose a game however so what are their chances of actually running the table?

The Titans? opponents this week are the Green Bay Packers and SPORTSBETTING.COM has Tennessee listed as 4-point home favorites with the Total set at 41.

In Week 10, the Titans travel to the Windy City to play the Bears with Tennessee once again favored in early Week 10 betting at SPORTSBETTING.COM, this time as a 2-point road fave.

A date against the division rival Jaguars in Jacksonville is in the order for Week 11. The Titans hold the edge over the Jags in the last 20 games with a 13-7 mark straight up and against the line and when Tennessee has made the trip to Jacksonville they has gone 9-5 SU and ATS the last 14 times. This will be a very tough matchup.

The former Houston Oilers have been money against divisional foes as a matter of fact, going 13-7 SU and 15-5 ATS in the last 20 AFC South matchups.

The Titans play the Green Bay Packers in Week 9 and play Green Bay?s former QB, Brett Favre, and his New York Jets in Week 12.

The team has four days rest between the Jets game and a Thanksgiving Thursday game against the woeful Detroit Lions who are, ironically, currently sitting at 0-7. It is entirely possible we see an undefeated team facing a winless team in this Turkey tilt.

SPORTSBETTING.COM has the game listed on its Games of the Year menu and has the Titans listed as a prohibitive 11.5-point road favorite.

With the Thanksgiving game out of the way, Tennessee doesn?t have to play again until December 7 when it has a home game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Titans are 5-3-0 SU and 4-4-0 ATS against the expansion Browns but have gone 0-3-0 SU and ATS in the last three matchups against Cleveland.

Week 15 will see a matchup of Houston?s present NFL team and its former team with the Titans making a return of sorts. A very winnable game for Tennessee.

Tennessee has made a habit of beating up on its old city going 11-2 SU and 8-5 against the number in H-Town.

If the Titans manage to stay undefeated up until this point, many will be predicting their first loss of the season the following week with a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Titans/Oilers franchise has a slight edge straight up against the Steelers, going 11-9 since 1994, although they?ve gone 10-3 SU in the last 13 games.

Things don?t look so promising against the spread though, as Tennessee is 8-11-1 ATS and 3-6 ATS in the last nine.

The team finishes the season off with a road tilt against the disappointing?at least so far?Indianapolis Colts.

The Titans are an even 10-10-0 straight up against Indy dating back to 1986 but have only gone 3-8 SU in the last 11 games.

Tennessee is 12-8 ATS in the last 20 games vs. Indy, in fact, the Titans haven?t lost a game ATS vs. the Colts in five tries going 5-0 ATS in their last five.

There are some tough games on the horizon for this team, but it is possible we could see them get into December and still have the old Dolphins waiting to pop champagne corks.

Enjoy the weekend NFL action and keep an eye on the Titans.
