CNN Headline News did a short news listing regarding Ford and GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington. The findings are as follows......

1. Ford- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept. The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees.

2. GM- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, suv's, cars and trucks.

3. Daimler Chrysler- $10 million to support of the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack.

4. Harley Davidson motorcycles- $1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept.

5. Volkswagen- Employees and management created a Sept 11 Foundation, funded initial with $2 million, for the assistance of the children and victims of the WTC.

6. Hyundai- $300,000 to the American Red Cross.

7. Audi- Nothing.
8. BMW- Nothing.
9. Daewoo- Nothing.
10. Fiat- Nothing.
11. Honda- Nothing despite boasting of second best sales month ever in August 2001
12. Isuzu- Nothing.
13. Mitsubishi- Nothing.
14. Nissan- Nothing.
15. Porsche- Nothing. Press release with condolences via the Porsche website.
16. Subaru- Nothing.
17. Suzuki- Nothing.
18. Toyota- Nothing despite claims of high sales in July and August 2001. Condolences posted on the website.

Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies
contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States. It's OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but it is
apparently not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis. I believe we should not forget things like this.
Say thank you in a way that gets their attention.

my question is why did they feel the need to publicize their "giving"?

i always thought it was proper to keep my "donations" quiet so that i was doing it for the right reasons.......

Good point freeze. Companies can take a big advantage by publicizing there donation off the tragedy. if you look at a lot of the big companies that did contribute didn't make an advertisment off of it. I still remember bitching about where were all the big companies while all this was going on. Its cuz it would be a hit on PR if they boasted on how much they gave to a tragedy to make themselves look better. Oh well ... I'm gonna go soke my feet in WD-40.. dont ask why it sounds cool though! :)

yep.....made me kind of upset that people would use that for advertising myself......

one thing i can't stand is when i see a dude getting his mug on the front page of the paper for some big donation.....only place to claim responsibility for donations from my point of view is on the tax return.....instead people use their donations to bring attention to themselves and show what a great guy they are.....wrong attitude....."when you give, give in secret".....found that saying somewhere.......you guys can guess as to where.....lol.....

Why make it public?

Why make it public?

My particular plant, donated over 40,000 dollars, cash, that was collected just from the hourly employees (through our union). Also, we donated 2 vehicles and sent them to FDNY.

You ask..."why make it public?". I don't think something of this magnitude could be kept "secret". The media is all over anything that the big 3 do...good or bad. I'm sure these auto companies made this public info on their own account, but do you really think that this could've gone unnoticed by the press?

yep.....made me kind of upset that people would use that for advertising myself......
I seem to remember saying something about "corporate greed".

I really don't consider this a matter of corporate greed...simply a matter of patriotism.

Nice, except that Daimler-Chrysler(Mercedes) is for all intents and purposes a German run company. 10 million.

Ford/JAGUAR- 1 million

GM/ SAAB- 1 million

Volkswagon/ AUDI - 2 million- yes, just another example of the press misleading the gullible public. Would you have felt better if it was broken down as 1m per? Yes, same company, only more dramatic with another 'zero' (Audi).

So basically we have most of the major foreign manufacturers represented (save BMW, Honda and Toyota) as giving a huge chunk of the car money 'allocated' to us. This is assuming that this report is correct.

Don't really see how it's that lopsided.

when you give, give in secret.......media schmedia.......tell them you are not disclosing your amount.....or better yet, tell them you are not disclosing your giving......

who knows, maybe thats what those other companies did......doubt it, but maybe?.......

read between the lines and read what is said, but what is really said........

again any act of giving to those in need deserves honor but we hsoudl not expect is as a result fo giving......i am proud of our car industry for donating money to those in need and for taking a leading role in doing so.........good going JSmooth.....you have a great heart as I am sure you were instrumental in giving yet declined to say individually what you gave.......that is what i really respect.......

in fact i would like to say to every one of you that have ever felt the need to give and then did so......and the only reason you did is because your heart told you to so.......the feeling you get inside from helping those in need is so rewarding in itself and that is all we need.........i myself have been in need lately and i am greatful to those who have helped me.......that is the kind of country we are.......and people who work their talks off but and extra for a fallin brother are the ones that define the heart of American.......kudos to them!!!!!

No, I told you that I gave over 40,000 dollars plus 2 vehicles. "I" am part of a team. If you respect each "individual" for not disclosing dollar amounts, then you must really respect each and every General Motors plant in the world for not making public their "individual" dollar amounts. ;)

Big J Your not getting much support but believe me there are many that feel the way you do.And when the time comes that a few other markets get hit by foreign competition you'll see see some others getting the hint.
A little on unions: Many have become too powerful but they definately have their place. My father has always been small farmer basically but also worked full time job. He spent 26 years @ non-union shoe factory and now draws $31.66 a month in retirement. Left there and went to Chrysler for 22 years and retired with $920.00 a month and full medical in benefits. What do you think his answer would be?
And Doc a question for you. I have seen many go thru med school and would say their free time is limited to say the least, yet at the most importment time of your life,a time that will bear tremendously on the rest of your life, and others, it appears your priorties are sports betting and posting in sports forums. With well over 1600 posts in 6 months (with 5 in this thread alone counting as 1)I'd have to say IF you are a med student you had better get your priorities in line because there will come a day when someones life will be in your hands and I can assure you their families primary concern will not be what the spread is on the Jets that day.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Doc After reading post I may have come off a little harsh which wasn't intended. The point I was trying to make was not a knock on you but trying to let you know that you are about to enter a tedious but rewarding field and believe me at some point in your life if you had choice of being successful capper hitting 60% year or a great Dr it will be a no brainer. We need good Dr's,hit those books :)

When's the last time Ford or GM donated to help rebuild a city that was destroyed outside of our country. Not knocking on those companies, but Americans feel like the world should stop because something bad happened to us. What will make us stronger is that we pull ourselves out of this mess and prove we are the greatest country.

Why should BMW or any of these other companies have to donate anything.

If you donate something, don't toot your own horn. You donate to help out not to make yourself feel better.

Don't mean to sound too much like a prick, but I can't believe you're bragging about how much your plant donated.

Well..........I don't know, but I'll bet they have.

American monies have went to rebuild, and otherwise better other countries, since this country could stand on it's own. Our country continues to drown in international debt, while constantly lending a hand to other people, and forgiving their massive debts.

I have always agreed that if you make a donation, you do it in the dark. Nobody needs to know how generous, or magnanimous you or others are.

Who gives a crap! Just Take it for what it's worth and go on!

Thank You GM, Ford, and Chrysler for your grateful donations!

That's all they want to hear. Not a bunch of bickering about it!

It's obvious to me that alot of people are driving these foreign cars. In that regards....Our hard-earned, American dollars are stuffing the pockets of the foreign auto makers, thus helping to fund their economy. So, if they are taking from us, then why not give a little back. That's one reason why.

If you donate something, don't toot your own horn. You donate to help out not to make yourself feel better. When donations of this magnitude are made, 9 times out of 10, the reipients of these donations are the ones who "let the cat outta the bag". In the case of WTC, if the corporations didn't say what they donated...the Red Cross certainly would've done it for them.

Don't mean to sound too much like a prick, but I can't believe you're bragging about how much your plant donated.
You call it bragging...I call it PRIDE.

I think I'm with ya on that one, Blue...

I'm not so sure the publicity is gonna help much anyway...If OJ gave some money to the liberty fund, I'd still think he was a murderer.

Also, if a corporation is public, they have to make their expenditures public. Exactly how public they want to make it is another matter.

Well, I would like to comment. I work at Diamler-Chrysler and am also proud of the cash the workers and union have donated. We had a lot of shirts printed with patriotic messages and ones that honored those who lost their lives on 9-11 and promise never to forget. It's a shame that such a tragedy, such as the ones that occured on 9-11, had to bring the patriot out in all of us. Never have i seen so much support and love for this country. I would like those who are thinking about donations to think of the workers, who sweat it out on the shop floors that gave so unselfishly and are proud americans. Although I am upset that Chrysler was taken over by Daimler-Benz, I cannot dwell on the fact, and have to move on. My dad worked for Chrysler for 30 years (64-94), brother (93- present) and myself (94-present). Sadly, this is the future of the auto industry, the "Big 3" will all merge with a foreign auto company at some point during the future. But, not to change the subject, what bothered me is that in a previous thread, people talked about unions and how they harm the nation. It may be out of ignorance or lack of knowledge that a lot of these comments were made. I hold no ill will to them. Unions built this country and helped shape it into what it is today, and will continue to into the future. Buying American keeps food on the table. I am proud to say my family has never owned a foreign vehicle. UAW workers are not greedy. There are conditions at factories that most would not believe. We bust our asses for the guys in suits at the top who don't know shit about what it takes to make a car, so that they can bathe their families in riches that most of us dream about. The wages of auto workers are rightly deserved and if one has a problem with that, they should think of it this way:
If you are busting your ass making a product that over the years is making your bosses richer and richer, who is to say that you are wrong in asking for your bigger slice of the pie. Athletes have done it, when they put their product out there for us to enjoy and the owners are rolling in the cash, they demanded higher wages. I think that those who have a negative opinion of unions, have never been in one or know of someone in one.
The whole issue over who gave what and why, is moot. I am sure one way or another it would have gotten out and those companies just wanted all to know that they are helping and maybe to keep others from wondering where were the auto companies in all of this. I could go on forever, but I won't. Proud to be an American, proud to be part of the UAW local 1264 Sterling Heights, MI , and God Bless you all and America.
