Chiefs Place Andersen & Richardson on IR; Make Other Roster Moves
12/17/2002 4:36 PM

DEC 17 (afternoon)--Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has placed FB Tony Richardson and K Morten Andersen on Injured Reserve. The team promoted RB Jarmar Julien from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, agreeing to terms of a two-year contract. The club also agreed to terms of two-year contract with WR Yo Murphy. In addition, WR Kirk Rogers was added to the practice squad to take the place of Julien. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreements were disclosed.

Richardson (6-1, 232) has played in 115 games (54 starts) during his eight seasons with Kansas City. He has carried the ball 353 times for 1,440 yards (4.1 avg.) with 15 touchdowns and caught 137 passes for 1,036 yards with eight TDs. The University of Auburn product played in the club?s first 14 games (12 starts) this season, rushing 22 times for 81 yards (3.7 avg.) with two TDs and 18 receptions for 125 yards with one TD. He suffered a dislocated right shoulder last week at Denver.

Andersen (6-2, 217) has appeared in 322 games, including 248 consecutive contests, the second-longest streak in NFL history. He is the second-leading scorer in NFL history with 2,153 points, making 486 of 616 career FGs and 695 of 704 PATs. This season he was enjoying one of his best campaigns, converting 22 of 26 FGs and a club-record 51 PATs for 117 points. His 117 points are second in the AFC and tied for fourth among kickers in the NFL. He joined with RB Priest Holmes to give the club two 100-point scorers for the first time in franchise history. The Michigan State product owns an NFL record with 14 career 100-point seasons.

Holmes' season may be over
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Chiefs running back Priest Holmes is tantalizingly close to some major NFL records but a hip injury may have ended his season.

``I would say there's a good chance it's over,'' coach Dick Vermeil said Wednesday night after talking with doctors.

Holmes is definitely out for Sunday's game against San Diego, Vermeil said. As for the regular-season finale at Oakland a week from Saturday, Vermeil said, ``I think it's doubtful.''

Vermeil will not automatically place Holmes on the injured reserve list because specialists in Kansas City, New York and Florida have all agreed there is a possibility Holmes could come back this season.

``The doctor said in two days, you might feel like, 'Hey, I want to run,''' Vermeil said. ``It's up to Priest. It may be six days. It may be three weeks.''

The defending NFL rushing champion is just two touchdowns away from Marshall Faulk's single-season record of 26. His league-leading 2,287 yards from scrimmage this year is the fourth-best in league history and within sight of Faulk's record of 2,429.

But Vermeil doesn't want to risk further injury to Holmes by bringing him back before he's ready.

``We're just not going to fool around,'' Vermeil said.

Holmes left Sunday's game against Denver when he was pulled down awkwardly after a 56-yard run that boosted his rushing total for the season to a franchise-record 1,615 yards, passing Miami's Ricky Williams for the league lead.

``At least we know there's no serious damage. When he feels good, he can go again,'' Vermeil said. ``How long that takes, we don't know. I'm certainly not going to push him. I would be very cautious.''

At 7-7, the Chiefs' playoff hopes are slim and Vermeil said Holmes isn't a selfish player who would be disappointed by the missed opportunity to break the records.

``In my conversation with him ... we really didn't discuss how he felt about maybe not being able to continue to move toward NFL records,'' Vermeil said. ``I think he has proved what he can do, to himself. I don't think he feels he has to prove it to anybody anymore.''

Ouch ....

Ouch ....

My Chiefs are hurting this week .... still don't see a line anywhere on this one .... Trent Green also had some stitches on his thumb or something like that. Will wait to see what the line is as I still think the Chiefs want to knock Schottenheimer and the Chargers out of the playoffs and will come out with a good effort.

Right Genosays,

I have found that one of the best angles and strongest plays of the year is when a division team, especially one that is good and that has played close a lot, has an incredible emotional game to knock the other team out of a playoff spot.

I feel the injuries to the Chiefs will get the rest of the team to play over their heads.

In this game, the Chiefs have all the above advantages.

The Chargers will play hard under Schott, but the Chiefs will match it.

I expect KC 20 - SD 17
