In bad restaurants, it's just like that iced tea thing. First, you run out of salsa. You order more, and then the chips run out. Why can't the busboy bring you both at the same time, every time?

And if there's not a state law against charging for chips and salsa, there ought to be. Any mexican food joint that CHARGES you for chips and sauce ought to be boarded up and shut down for business.

Chips and salsa is a God given right at any self respecting Tex-Mex joint, and DON'T look at me funny when I want more salsa...think of it as a compliment when that bowl runs dry. I only finish off the good stuff.

Woe be to you Monk. You should be lucky as to have it so good. Out here in Delaware their idea of Tex Mex or any kind of Mexican food is Taco Bell :(

Their idea of Carne Asada out here is a Cheesesteak????

And there are plenty of wire-haired Man goblins out here too!!!

BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
Hey MOnk-

Sorry pal but your being a little selfish on this one. I used to work at Carlos O' Kelly's at College... We had a number of people, cheap ass couples, but one in particular, that would come in, order to cokes, and maybe a taco ala carte if they were feeling generous, and proceed to eat 10-15 bowls of chips and salsa For FREE, and then tip a dollar, maybe 1.50 on payday...

Now, a number of things were annoying about cheapos like this...
1. They acted like they were "ousmarting" somebody.. Like, no one else knew what the hell they were doing... We all thought they were the laughing stock of civilization...no selft respect.
2. They would continual wave us down for more chips and salsa...I mean, we are talking about 10-20 trips to this table for a waiter, myselft, and the check would be like 3.00 to 9.00, when a normal couples bill was 30-40 and consisted of an average of 4 trips to thier table.

How wanted to call them cheap ass weasels and kick them out, but I knew that wouldnt fly, so I actually devised a better plan..

Rather than grab the empty bowls of chips and salsa each time I brought them new ones, I left them on their table....it was hilarious, They would have like two sodas in front of them, with a stack about a foot and a half high of empty wooden chip bowls, and porcelain salsa bowls....Everyone in the restaraunt now knew what they were up to, and I sure a majority of them gave them akward looks...... This couple almost pannicked in embarrassment, and they never did it again, in fact I never saw them again....

I am sure they just went to some bar with free popcorn after that, ordered a few waters and ate 50 bowls of popcorn for supper....freakin weasels... People like that give Mexican joints the incentive to charge...and I would have loved to charge them

No real texmex joint can charge for C&S. The ones that charge are the ones like the places that you worked at, near college campuses, which is similar to the one I went to the other day. The reason they charge is because the students come in, eat chips and leave.

I remember going to El Patio's downtown near the campus. We sat down, saw the charge for chips and salsa and walked out. That was the first and last time I went there.

Best Tex-Mex joint I've ever been to was El Fenix in Dallas. Their chips and salsa are good, but they also give everyone at the table their own individual salsa container. If they are busy and you are eating alot of salsa they will sometimes leave a small pitcher full of salsa at the table so you can refill your salsa at your convience.

They also do the same thing with the water, they will usually leave you a jug of ice water so you can refill your water when you want to. You can also get the ice/water mixture to your liking.

Their food is good too. Good enchiladas, good tortilla soup, good chalupas, it's all good!

Man I wish they would open an El Fenix in Austin. :(

On the course!
When I was head salsa waiter at "Los Sphincter en Fuego", I never had anyone ask for a second bowl of salsa, but we went through scads of ass wipe.
