ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- It would be safe to say no golfer has ever enjoyed his major championship trophy more than Stewart Cink.
Yes, when Tiger Woods had the Tiger Slam, and all four major trophies sat on his mantle, that was cool. But Cink's year with the Claret Jug has been golf's version of "Kilroy was here."
Honk if you've seen the Claret Jug.
You've no doubt enjoyed Cink's Nike commercial where he uses the Claret Jug as a coffee dispenser. That wasn't exactly a stretch.
Now, let it be noted that the reigning champ gets a replica of the Claret Jug. He has the real thing for a year and then has the replica, so Cink gets some leeway.
But come on.
"One of my buddies is a huge barbecue guy," Cink said. "I mean, he's like an authentic smoker of meats. He's a master. He wanted to use it to baste a pork shoulder on the Fourth of July. And so during our picnic, he filled up the jug with homemade baste that he uses and we poured it over the smoked pork butt."
Cink also loaned out the trophy to three different golf clubs in his Atlanta area for display, sort of a "thank you'' for their support and free green fees.
It has all been a bunch of fun for Cink, and maybe a little too much -- at least to some people.
"I had a conversation [recently] with a very high-ranking member of Augusta," Cink said. "In fact, the highest ranking member of Augusta, and he was commenting about my use of the Claret Jug in a commercial for Nike, which I used in the one I pour coffee. I pour coffee in the actual Claret Jug that I used for that. "And that high-ranking member at Augusta. he asked me if I had to get permission for that and I said, no, I didn't get permission, I just used it. [He then said] 'If you end up with a green jacket, I hope you don't mind if we put restrictions on what you do with it.' I said, 'I don't mind.' "
