just a few thoughts...
CNR (CNI) came in with earnings this week for the quarter of EPS .73 cents compared to .85 cents last year.
the number were better than expected and the stock went up slightly. a CAW strike where there was an agreement and then voted down cost the company 8 cents a share this quarter. Also the rising cdn. dollar compared to the US $ cost the railway about 7 cents a share.
the cdn. dollar has since gone down and will be below .80 cents for the rest of the year, below .75 currently.
volume of freight moved this quarter was 5% higher than last year and free cash flow was $272 million compared to 181 million. Operating costs also declined at the railway. Managment believe they may be able to cut costs even more in the next 12-18 months. A very well run railway....best in North America and a good way to play a rebounding North American economy.
note: own CNR, sometimes trade around the position but it has been in my portfolio for years.
CP is the smaller cdn. railway company they recently said that do to increase demand to Asia in natural resources they stand to benifit.
my main problem with CP is their operating ratio is higher than CN and though they plan to reduce and slowly are lowering costs, the progress is slow. Managment should be wanting to reduce costs quicker.
also there may be a drought in Western Cdn. which would effect the grain crop, lack of moisture and grasshoppers are not a good combination.
CP would be more effected than CNR.
own a smaller position of CP, CP could have more upside since they have more costs to cut, not as well run and could improve. (more room for improvement than CNR).
just the way these companies are run, believe a CNR shareholder has more money than a CP shareholder five years from now.....history points in this direction also....

just scary, 18 glossy pictures of nothing but buzzwords until the chairman and CEO statements. high of flash but low on content....![Frown :( :(](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)

in the first three months of 2004 have had a number of people I know who have needed surgeries/medical attention. some have been in hospital for almost a month when it was thought to be only a few days.
the good news is eveyone seems to be improving...glad it is not a year of funerals.
anyways a filled in for a friend, she had an operation last month and could not attend her food group.
these food groups are popular and seem to be growing. this one has about 400 people anyways you order from a list and a month later your order comes in.
food orders come in every 3-4 times a year, and once a year you have to do the work of unloading the truck, sorting, checking, re-cheking, moving. 10 hours of pure JOY
most of the products are the same prices as a grocery store. some items are cheaper but most are the same; however was surprised at all of the labels .... here are some:
organic (everything is organic)
fair trade (mostly coffee, hope it works and not just a label)
certified organic, pre packaged, ultra organic, hand harvested, environmentally friendly, pre cleaned (rice product??),
most of these terms prove that marketing probably does work, have not idea what most them are, must have bee a dozen more.
how are your organic hand picked greens?
thanks
