my 5 yr old boy played soccer for the first time this past yr

short field, small goals, no golies, no score---every game was a tie even though the kids know who won lol

they all just run around like a bunch of goofs lol
do a couple easy drills, let them play and have fun
put a stop to tackling right away---some kids like to do that for fun instead of play the ball and if that is going on you will have some upset parents on your hands :cursin:

short attention spans...dont expect them to learn to much---but you will see some improving as season goes on

Soccer at that age is usually called "herding". It's funny to watch them run in a pack around the ball. Sorry i'm no help on the coaching but keep it fun, maybe some basic dribbling drills but nothing much.

You have just attained cult status!! You will be a hero to these kids. Have fun with them. There is no such thing as playing a position at this age. Wherever the ball is, that's where you'll find 20 enthusiastic children. (this does not include the goalies, although they sometimes even they join in the chase) Be prepared to be the on field medic as well as coach. At this age they seem to get run into and over alot when they're more interested in dirt, puddles, birds, butterflies, clouds, airplanes, waving to mom & dad and whatever else distracts them every second. Bandaids are magic, even if they're put on grass stains.

For them to accomplish dribbling is a successful season. Add in some good passing and scoring a goal will get you nominated for "Coach of the Year."

It gets a little frustrating at times but keep smiling. Words of encouragement, cheers, high fives, and buying ice cream after the game will already make you a winner in their eyes. You will be put up on a pedestal right next to their dads.

I have coached youth soccer from pre-kindergarten to sixteen year olds. This age is the most challenging BUT the most rewarding. You will see vast improvement by years' end. Thank you for volunteering to help our young ones Chopsticks.

sounds like perfect advice from nj... and troll. FUnny as heck to watch, and like saint said, it's like herding, lol!

No real strategy, and whatever team has the superstar athlete will win. There's usually 1 or 2 kids on the team that are great, and the rest are not very good. These 2 kids will dominate and score all the goals and essentially play with themselves, lol!

OH
bit of advice......
Have a supply of orange slices and Caprisun's/ Juice boxes! :em71: Gotta have the half time snack. At that age you should change the title from coach to Shepard, cause all you do is point the kids toward the ball and then herd them around for an hour. Good times!
