On Tuesday, Alouettes? head coach Marc Trestman said he didn?t anticipate any lineup changes for Thursday?s game against Winnipeg.
But now he has announced tailback Avon Cobourne will miss the game with an ankle injury. At no time since last Saturday?s game, at Toronto, and Tuesday?s walk-through workout inside Olympic Stadium did Trestman indicate Cobourne was suffering from an injury.
?I had no indication at all he?d been bothered,? Trestman said on Wednesday.
Trestman said Cobourne, returner Tim Maypray (shin) and receiver Kerry Watkins all ran around following the walk-through. Cobourne apparently told the coach he wasn?t 100 per cent.
?He felt he could play, but not 60 minutes,? Trestman said. ?As much as he wants the ball, he?s just as unselfish and felt he couldn?t do it.?
Coincidentally, Cobourne has been growing increasingly frustrated over his lack of activity this season. And he?s coming off a game against the Argonauts in which he gained only 26 yards on 11 carries, potentially adding to the plot. Through seven games, Cobourne has 82 carries for 403 yards.
He?ll be replaced by second-year pro Brandon Whitaker. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Whitaker last started a game Nov. 7, at Toronto, in the regular-season finale. He gained 61 yards on nine carries.
?He has played intermittently,? Trestman said. ?But when he?s played, he?s played very well. He?s an explosive runner who has got speed, bursts and good hands. This won?t change the way we call plays or do things.?
