WTF AM I MISSING???

I just watched the Rams punt three times from around the 50. Each time the ball came out to around the 20.(Except for penalty).
Now why dont these punters kick the ball out of bounds anymore. Nobody freakin does it. 80% of the time the ball hits the 5 and rolls into the endzone. YOU CAN OBVIOUSLY LAND THE BALL AT THE 5, LAND THAT SHIT OUT OF BOUNDS. I DONT UNDERSTAND. Am I stupid, I must be missing something. WTF

On the course!
I have asked myself that same question for 15 years!

Why land it on the 5, watch it roll in the endzone, and bitch at the coverage guys?

I am pretty certain that most kickers don't even know they can do this!

I am not sure but I was wondering. Punters are paid for their average of yards per kick. At the end of the year the coachs dont look down and go , oh he kicked for a 35 yard average but he kicked alot of out of bounds kicks close to the goal line. The punters by kicking it into the end zone get to count the entire yardage.

Its not right but if I were a punter I would do what i had to do to keep my job and kick it into the end zone.

I think a much better way to look at that would be bonuses for inside the 20, inside the 15...10...5 while also looking at averages. I would much rather have a guy that pins the opponent inside their 5 than get more yards out of the punt.

That just does not make sense.

If what was that easy? I am referring to the pay schedule. If it is set up like mentioned above then it needs to be restructured.

I think it is because the rush usually comes from the side and not straight up the middle. If the punter was to try to angle the punt he might kick it right into the rushers. Or I could be dead wrong and they are just stupid soccer players.

when i punted in high school - i always tried to corner kick it - only because our punt team sucked and would give up a TD everytime. Its just too hard - to many things could go wrong. Its a big risk doing a directional kick. If you shank a directional kick - oh mannn then your in some trouble for sure. The weather plays a big factor. Now I know Jeff Feagles is the KING of Corner kicks...but he was kicking in a dome all them years.

Also - the players are just so fast. My cousin kicked at BG and he had tryouts with Cleveland - Miami - and Detroit. And they all told him the same thing - he is taking to long to kick it. He use to go step step and a half then kick. Punters these days are 2 steps and thats all...no more or your gone. When you have to directional kick - it takes longer , get the ball turn your body take the right steps.....not worth it. More bad then good comes out of it....these days.

Not dissing Omar's undoubted skills and years of hard work but...

I reckon I could kick that sucker into the corner with half a step...

hey, then again, what do I know, I'm just a "stupid soccer player" ;)

with the steroid psyshed out cornerbacks and linebackers coming in on you, my guess is you would drop down and watch the world go by and never get the kick off.

Cover guys

Cover guys

The cover guys are so much faster nowadays that they can get down near the endzone before the punt arrives. If you go for the coffin corner and shank the punt the other team might get the ball at the 30yd line. I might not be a genius, but I think the 20yd line is better than the 30.
