NASCAR Picks for Daytona

For the third time this year drivers will have to deal with the chaos that comes with restrictor plate racing when the Cup Series visits Daytona International Speedway Saturday night for the Coke Zero 400. The summer event at the track may not have the same aura surrounding it as the season-opening Daytona 500, but that doesn't mean the wrecks aren't just as big and the outcome just as unpredictable. Plain and simple, this weekend's race is one of the few on the schedule that almost every driver believes they can win and one of the few races that every driver knows could end with them being involved in a violent, multi-car wreck.
For fantasy owners, there aren't many things as frustrating as a trip to a restrictor plate track. One bobble or ill-timed tap by any driver on any lap can wipe out a dozen or more cars in the matter of seconds. There really isn't a safe spot on the track or safe strategy that a driver can use to survive and avoid the carnage, and there isn't a safe strategy for fantasy owners either. That being said, I always recommend minimizing the potential damage as much as possible depending on the format. In any fantasy league that limits the number of times a driver can be used or in leagues where a different driver has to be used every week, this is one of the races to rely on the lesser-known, sleeper drivers in the series. For one, it prevents a wasted start from a big name if they happen to get caught up in a wreck. Meanwhile, the race is also one of the best chances to score a solid finish out of some of the bottom feeders in the series.

1. Matt Kenseth, #20 Husky/Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Although he blew a motor while dominating the Daytona 500 earlier this year, Kenseth has still finished third or better in three of his last four starts at the track. Meanwhile, he leads all drivers in wins, top-five finishes, top-10s and laps led at restrictor plate tracks since the start of the last season. During the stretch, Kenseth has scored 24 more points and has led 363 more laps than any other driver.

2. Tony Stewart, #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

The Daytona 500 continues to elude Stewart, but he has owned the July event at the track. He is the defending winner of this weekend's race and has won at Daytona in July four times since 2005. There is something about this particular race that brings out the best in Stewart.

3. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Junior hasn't won a plate race in a while, but he has remained one of the best drivers in the series when it comes to handling the draft. Dating back to the start of last season, he has scored the third-most points at superspeedway events. At Daytona specifically, he has four top-five finishes since 2010, including three runner-up efforts.

4. Clint Bowyer, #15 5-Hour Energy, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A]

While he has never won a race at Daytona, Bowyer has had a knack for piling up solid finishes. Since the start of the 2003 season, his 15.5 average finish at the track is the fourth best in the series. Since the start of last year, Bowyer has also scored the sixth-most points at the plate tracks overall.

5. Brad Keselowski, #2 Miller Lite, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class A]

His two plate track wins have come at Talladega, but Keselowski has been close to adding Daytona to the list recently. He finished eighth at the track last summer and followed it up with a fourth-place run in this year's Daytona 500. Throw in the fact that he has scored the second-most points in the series at plate tracks since 2012, and Keselowski is a fairly safe pick by Daytona standards.

6. Kevin Harvick, #29 Budweiser/Rheem, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class A]

He has been an innocent victim in both of the big wrecks Kyle Busch has triggered at the plate tracks this season, but Harvick's overall numbers at the superspeedways remain solid. He has been particularly strong at Daytona where he is a two-time winner in his career. More importantly, Harvick has finished seventh or better four times in his last seven starts at the track, winning the July event in 2010.

7. Carl Edwards, #99 Fastenal/Aflac/UPS/Subway, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Although he is still searching for a superspeedway win at the Cup level, Edwards has quietly become one of the more reliable fantasy options at Daytona lately. He has finished in the top 10 in six of his last eight starts at the track, and he has finished sixth or better five times in the last six July events. Edwards might not win this weekend, but a top-10 finish can be as good as a victory at Daytona.

8. Greg Biffle, #16 3M/Bondo, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After struggling at the plate for most of his career, Biffle has come on strong lately. He has scored the fourth-most points in the series at the superspeedways since the start of last year, and his 110 laps led during the span are the second most of any driver. At Daytona, Biffle has finished sixth or better twice in his last three starts.

9. Paul Menard, #27 Menards, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Menard has emerged as a silent assassin at the plate tracks for fantasy owners in recent years. He doesn't get a lot of hype, but he has an 11.6 average finish at Daytona since 2011 and has finished in the top 15 four times in five starts during the stretch. Menard also has three top-10 finishes in the five races, so he has plenty of upside.

10. Jeff Burton, #31 Caterpillar/Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The veteran has actually been a fairly reliable option at the superspeedways recently. Since the start of last season, Burton ranks fifth in the series in points scored at the plate tracks. He has four top-10s in six starts during the stretch and has finished in the top five in two of his last three Daytona starts.

11. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

As his victory in the Daytona 500 to open the year suggests, Johnson can never be counted out. That being said, he has been wildly inconsistent at Daytona and has actually finished outside the top 25 in five of his last seven starts at the track. A season sweep at Daytona can't be ruled out, but fantasy owners probably want to save him for another day in leagues that limit the number of times a driver can be used throughout the year.

12. Joey Logano, #22 Shell-Pennzoil, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Logano is in the middle of a nice little hot streak at Daytona. He has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at the track, compiling an 8.8 average finish during the stretch. Logano has also finished in the top five in his last two starts at Daytona in July, so a big night isn't out of the question.

13. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

His overall numbers at the plate tracks have been average at best for a while, but Gordon has been on a mini roll in the July race at Daytona. He has three straight top-12 finishes in the summer event at the track, compiling a 7.0 average finish during the stretch. It would be nice to see a little more consistency out of Gordon, but it is tough to argue with his numbers in this particular race.
14. David Ragan, #34 CSX Transportation/Peanut Patch, Front Row Motorsports [Yahoo Class C]

While he is an afterthought most weeks, Ragan becomes an excellent sleeper pick whenever the series visits a plate track. Heck, the guy won a Talladega earlier this year and won at Daytona in July of 2011. Fantasy owners have a realistic chance to get a great finish out of Ragan this weekend, and they should take full advantage of the opportunity.

15. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance/Quaker State, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Kahne is yet another driver that seems to come to life under the lights at Daytona. His 18.3 average finish at the track overall isn't that impressive, but he has reeled of six straight top-15 finishes in the July event. Kahne has logged five top-10 finishes during the stretch and has compiled a 7.3 average finish.

16. Kyle Busch, #18 Mars Brands/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Although he is a former winner of the July race at Daytona (and has had his share of dominant runs at the plate tracks), it is tough to fully trust Busch this weekend. After all, he has triggered massive wrecks in both of the superspeedway events this year, decimating fantasy rosters in the process. Sure, Busch could end up in victor lane this weekend, but as with many big names, owners will probably want to save him for another day in any league that has limits driver usage.

17. A.J. Allmendinger, #47 Kingsford/Clorox, JTG Daugherty Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Allmendinger will be behind the wheel of the No. 51 this weekend, and while it would have been nice for fantasy owners to see Regan Smith instead, there is still sleeper potential. After all, Allmendinger has finished in the top 20 in four of his last seven starts at Daytona, finishing as high as third. In fact, he has finished 11-th or better at the track twice in his last three starts. Meanwhile, the No. 51 team ha slogged top-10 finishes in both of the plate races in 2013 so his equipment can get the job done.

18. Kurt Busch, #78 Furniture Row, Furniture Row Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Although he has been on a roll heading into Daytona, Busch just hasn't had a lot of success at the plate tracks recently. He has failed to crack the top 25 in both superspeedway starts this year and has finished outside the top 25 in his last three starts at Daytona. Granted, Busch does have solid career numbers at the track, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a bit of a shaky pick this weekend.

19. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Hamlin has never really had much success at plate racing, especially at Daytona. In 15 career starts at the track, he has managed a mediocre 20.5 finish. Not to mention the fact that Hamlin has cracked the top 10 only twice in his 15 starts. His horrible luck the past few weeks doesn't exactly help his fantasy value either.

20. Michael Waltrip, #55 Aaron's Dream Machine, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class C]

The three-time Daytona winner finished ninth at the track last fall, and fantasy owners should consider him a legitimate sleeper option this weekend. In fact, his 15.8 average finish at the plate tracks since the start of last season is the seventh best of any driver. Waltrip may be annoying on television, but he can still help fantasy lineups at Daytona and Talladega.

21. Jamie McMurray, #1 McDonald's/Cessna, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

He is the ultimate boom-or-bust option this weekend, but fantasy owners looking to hit it big may want to consider McMurray. He has three plate track wins in his career, including two at Daytona. On the flip side, he has a 24.2 average finish at the track for his career, so fantasy owners need to know going in that there isn't much middle ground with McMurray.

22. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., #17 Best Buy/Valvoline/Zest, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class C]

The sample size isn't huge, but Stenhouse has shown signs of being a solid plate track driver. After all, he has finished in the top 20 in all three of his starts at superspeedways, and he has finished in the top 15 in both of his starts in 2013. Stenhouse is bound to have some rough outings eventually, but for now, he has to be considered a viable sleeper pick.

23. Ryan Newman, #39 Quicken Loans/Haas Automation, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After winning the Daytona 500 in 2008, Newman went into a terrible slump at the track that saw him finish 20th or worse in eight straight starts. However, he has righted the ship a bit lately, logging back-to-back top-five finishes at Daytona. Granted, his overall numbers still aren't great, but at least he has shown some signs of life.

24. Bobby Labonte, #47 Kingsford/Clorox, JTG Daugherty Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Fantasy owners looking for a surprise sleeper pick in deeper leagues should definitely consider Labonte. For one, he has finished 16th or better in five of his last six starts at Daytona, picking up three straight top 15s. Meanwhile. Labonte ranks eighth in scoring among all drivers at plate tracks since the start of 2012.

25. Aric Almirola, #43 Smithfield Foods, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Almirola still has some work to do before he can be considered a legitimate fantasy option at the plate tracks. He is still looking for his first top 10 at Daytona, and in two of his four starts at the track he has finished 30th or worse. Almirola has improved his result in his last two starts at Daytona, but there are definitely better sleeper picks out there.
26. Juan Montoya, #42 Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

For a while, it appeared that Montoya was going to establish himself as one of the better plate drivers. However, he has followed a stretch when he finished in the top 10 four times in five starts at Daytona with three straight finishes outside the top 25 at the track. More concerning is Montoya's dismal 33.0 average finish in plate races since the start of last year.

27. Martin Truex, Jr., #56 NAPA Auto Parts, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Daytona has never been all that kind to Truex. In 16 career starts at the track, he has a 21.4 average and has managed just a single top-10 and has never finished in the top five. At best, fantasy owners are looking at a top-15 finish from Truex this weekend, so there just isn't enough upside given the risk.

28. David Gilliland, #38 Love's Travel Stops/A&W Restaurants, Front Row Motorsports [Yahoo Class C]

While he isn't the best sleeper option available this weekend, Gilliland does have some value in deeper leagues. After all, he does have a 17.2 average finish in the last 10 plate races, and he has actually scored the ninth-most points in the series during the stretch. At Daytona, a top-20 finish can be useful.

29. Marcos Ambrose, #9 Stanley/Dewalt Power Tools, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

He just hasn't been able to get a feel for the draft, especially at Daytona. Ambrose has managed just one top-10 finish in nine starts at the track, posting a 23.4 average finish. In fact, he has only managed two top-15 finishes in his nine Daytona starts so he his upside is basically nonexistent.

30. Danica Patrick, #10 GoDaddy.com, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Patrick's season as a whole has been forgettable, but her signature moment to date did come in the season opener. She sat on the pole and finished eighth in the Daytona 500, and she benefits as much as any driver from the ability of the restrictor plates to level the playing field. For fantasy owners that play in leagues where just about every driver has to be used during the course of the season, this is probably the week to use Patrick.
