INSIDE THE GAME
POINT GUARD
Kevin Bell's late-game decision making against Boise State didn't please the Fresno State coaching staff. He should rebound tonight. Bell had seven points, seven rebounds, nine assists and no turnovers against the Vandals last Monday.
In that game, Idaho's 5-foot-10 Keoni Watson had two assists and four turnovers. Watson is coming off a 13-point effort against Hawaii.
Advantage: FRESNO STATE
WING
Ja'Vance Coleman's ankle injury would be a factor any other night, but not against the Vandals. With or without Coleman, the Bulldogs shouldn't have a problem. Donovan Morris showed more aggressiveness on offense against Boise State, but made just 1 of 8 3-point attempts. Tonight provides him the perfect opportunity to get on track. Remember, Fresno State made 14 of 28 3s last week against the Vandals.
Tanoris Shepard (5-11) plays with a lot of heart and is Idaho's top scorer (15.3 ppg). But he tries to do too much at times. The Bulldogs did a solid job containing 3-point specialist Brett Ledbetter (6-3), who has 34 3s.
Advantage: FRESNO STATE
POST
Fresno State's big men need to do a better job on the boards. No way they should have allowed Boise State's Tez Banks to pull down 17 rebounds. Quinton Hosley can't grab every board. Offensively, Hector Hernandez now leads the team in 3-point field goal percentage (40%) and should get his shot off easily against Idaho.
Vandals frontcourt players David Dubois (6-5) and Desmond Nwoke (6-8) scored a combined 13 points against the Bulldogs last week. Idaho only had 26 rebounds in that game.
Advantage: FRESNO STATE
BENCH
The second game of a road trip is always tricky, so Fresno State needs contributions from its bench. All the reserves played 11 or more minutes in last Monday's 35-point blowout of Idaho. Dwight O'Neil continues to be solid since losing his starting role. He'll get it back if Morris continues his questionable shot selection.
Idaho's Mike Kale (6-8) is coming off a nine-point, seven-rebound effort against Hawaii. In that same game, the rest of the Vandals reserves shot 2 for 10.
Advantage: FRESNO STATE
THE INSIDE SCOOP
The Bee asked Boise State coach Greg Graham, whose team defeated Idaho 82-68 Jan. 28, for his thoughts on the Vandals:
"I think at home, they're going to [beat] somebody. Shepard is an all-league player. He might not get it because of where they are. He's kind of a miniature Ja'Vance. He's hard to guard. He can really score the ball. And we let Ledbetter hit five 3s against us.
"They're not very big. The three of us [Fresno State, Boise State and Idaho] are kind of the three little teams. But Leonard Perry's teams always play hard, record or no record."
