I have a relatively new computer. For some reason if I walk away from it and leave it idle more than 5 min it freezes up. Any idea why? I have Windows Me. 128MB of RAM. I have plenty of hard-drive space open. Virus Free.

Thanx in advance

Hey DNY,
Would you happen to have more info on the pc. Like specs. Also ... by any chance would you have a screen saver or any sort of power saver enabled ( I know its a silly question, but ya never know )

I am probably one of the few people in the world that does not use a screen saver for the purposes of saving memory LOL

I don't have power save as well. Maybe hellah is right. A lot of my friends cringed when I told them that I had ME. Notice you really did not see ME get off the ground when it came out last year and XP immediately followed. The only worry I have about XP is that he is Hacker Friendly.

Does anyone think I may be better off building a root account with Red Hat and going that way instead?

Thanx for the help:)

Hey DN,
Win XP is a more stable. The question is with 128mb ram you should really considering getting a lot more then what you have now. Memory is really cheap these days and can grab 256mb cheap. Check out crucial.com for your memory. How fast is your pc and how big of a HD?

966MHZ--Can you believe that I am becoming a Dinosaur already? This was the fastest one availible at the time LOL

I will look into that and boost it then. How much woudl a copy of XP cost me? Would it be cheaper b/c I already have ME?

Thank You

If you already have ME, it will only be $99 at a retail store like Best Buy, CompUSA, a lot cheaper if you go for a pirated copy. But for a new OS upgrade I'd rather get the original. It's well worth it. I upgraded from ME to XP 2 weeks ago and not once did it crash on me yet. You already have a high power CPU, so a memory upgrade is not a bad idea, either.

anyone here in the retail business, or can recommend a good place online to buy memory that reputable but cheap? most places have both pc and mac, so if you know of a good pc memory place let me know please.

right-click anywhere on the desktop
click on properties
click on screen saver
click on Power (or Power Settings)

Turn of Monitor - usually not a problem if your monitor is reasonably new

Turn of HD's - VERY BAD if you are on a network OR if you gave a low wattage power supply.

System Standby - ALWAYS BAD (except some highend notebooks) - Disable it (set to Never)

System Hibernates - the same. A technology in progress. - Disable it (set to Never)

Windows ME is salvagable if you run all the Windows Updates. Should be a listing for it in your start menu. Make sure you do all of the Critical and Recommended Updates. Screen saver shouldn't be a factor.

So Cal
GOTO 'start' then 'run'
Type 'msconfig"
click 'startup' tab on top

Anything checked will tell you whats auto loaded when you turn on your computer and will be running in your background. You dont need any of that garbage, just unclick except systray and restart your system. Problem should be solved and your system should respond much faster. The only difference is you will need to manually open files needed. You may want to keep virus softare enabled to auto-load, but as an avid gamer it slows me down too much.

I think most everyone is in the same area of how to fix that problem but prospector hit the nail on the head. Go to your power management properties and follow his instruction.

I've worked directly with just about all Windows OS products and ME is known for giving problems. I personally prefer Win 2000 for my own reasons but for overall performance, go with XP.

Let us know if this helped.
