I need to delete a file on my computer. It wont let me. It says access is denied. It is a old update for my scanner that I dont use.
I have tried to delete it in windows, and dos. Same message every time. Access is denied. I tried the del all files command in dos, erase, deltree(says bad command???) and rd(remove directory). I was able to delete its subdirectories, and subfiles.I would have uninstalled, but wasnt an option. The thing is that it pops up and says HP Precision Scan LT Setup, no digital signature, then I ok. Thats all I can do. The thing is so annoying, it keeps popping up. HELP

the old program is probably "right protected." the only thing i know to do is to go to start, control panel, add/remove programs and try to get rid of it there, or reformat your computer. hope that helps.

Close the Scanner program running on your computer. Then try deleting the file.

If you dont see an Icon of the Scanner running in the background press Control + Alt + Delete. Client on Taskbar or if its XP click on Processes and see if u can find the process running for the scanner and close it.

What version of Windows do you have:

You can try this out. It works on Windows ME. Not sure if it works with all versions of Windows but worth a try.

Right click on the file you want to delete (make sure you don't want it back later), and choose "open with..." then open the file with notepad. On the first line, enter a line of random letters or gibberish (I enter a line of X's or Y's or something). Then click "file" and click "save" and close notepad. Return to the file, right click and choose "delete" and--it lets you delete!

Good luck

If you are on Windows 98 or earlier, you won't be able to go to the process to kill it with task Manager. Try booting your computer in Safe Mode then deleting it. But you shouldn't have to reformat your computer.
