Trying to help my Mom with a loading problem with her Dell Inspiron 530 desktop and need some help

When it starts up I get this on the monitor

This computer has an add in graphics card, but the monitor cable is plugged into the integrated video connector. To attach the monitor cable to the add-in graphics card:
1. Shut down the computer
2. Plug the monitor cable into the add-in graphics card connector. This may require a video adapter or video adapter cable.
3. Turn on the computer

Currently the blue cable is plugged into the VGA on the back of the monitor and into the back of the computer

There is also a DVI-D outlet on the back of the monitor that doesn't fit the blue cable

Been on the tech forums but confused as to what I need to do or purchase

i also plugged in the vga cable to the 2nd option as shown, but the monitor loads with stripes and then nothing shows on the monitor

Sounds like the DVI is the add in card

This PC has a DVI socket on it's add-in graphics card. A DVI socket looks like this:

This will be the easiest solution

To fix this, you can buy an inexpensive adapter (Amazon US, UK) that turns the VGA plug on the end of the monitor's VGA cable into a DVI plug that will fit the DVI socket on the PC. This is called a DVI (Male) to VGA (Female) adapter, and looks like this:

This should do the trick - just double check that this would fit your DVI - I have seen one that did not fit

the monitor is a Dell S2230MX

don't have my phone on me or I'd post a pic

there are 3 rows of 8 with a slit next to the middle one...and then there is the standard vga port I've been trying to plug in to

the picture on that link you gave to me looks like it would fit perfectly

The back of your monitor looks like this correct?

monitor-s2230mx-overview4.jpg

it looks similar(i can't tell if it's the same) , the monitor has the 8x3 holes with the slit next to the middle row, and under that is where it says DVI-D..and then the vga blue is similar to the pic

VGA in the back of the monitor

The DVI is on the back of the PC - correct?

I'm not sure what the DVI is on the back of the PC
..

the back of the computer looks exactly like the 1st PC here

This is the Female DVI port

I believe it is on the back of your PC

Using the blue VGA that you already have, you can plug the vga cord in to the monitor and using the vga to dvi adaptee from amazon, you plug the other end in to the dvi on the back of your computer

Does both your computer and monitor have HDMI ?

the female dvi is on the back of the monitor..the amazon product looks like it will fit directly in there, and the other side is where i plug the vga cable in to, and then connect it to the vga port on the pc?

i don't see an HDMI port on the monitor nor the pc

thanks for you help Josh, I ordered the amazon converter and hopefully it works:0008

Since you're helping out, I really try hard not to pile on Hedge since he takes so much abuse, but it's really hard. Any tips on how to curb it?

The converter will help regardless - Next time you are over there, snap a photo of both the computer and the back of the monitor

I reserve the right to post, I'll check it out next time I'm over at your moms once everything is up and running

We need to make sure we're on the same page - Here's my touch up of the computer pic

On the computer

thats right for the back of the pc...the dvi on the pc is a little different then the dvi-d on the back of the monitor

the dvi on the back of the pc is 3x8 squares with 4 little squares next to it instead of a slit like on the back of the monitor
