Hello, hopefully someone has an answer to my problem. Recently I discovered the Melissa virus on my computer, it had infected 80+ files. I deleted everything using McAfee program, but now I am having trouble booting my comp. It reaches the screen with the Windows 98 logo on it and just freezes. I installed my Windows 98 disk and tried to set up Windows, it installed everything and restarted the comp. After restarting, it went to the DOS screen with a:\ prompt. Not sure what to do next, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

THx guys for the reply. I had the start up disk in the floppy drive and the win 98 cd in the cd drive. It scanned the drives and copied the files to drive c, but when it went to restart it froze. Does it matter if the printer and other accessories are still connected to the CPU.

You can try formatting your C: drive. There might still be something on it. Then reinstall the windows OS again. Some Viruses can take out your motherboard. I'm not that familiar with Melissa. Do you know what it actually affects. Some of these viruses are stuck in the motherboard's on board memory and destroy the motherboard. It will send the computer into an eternal loop not allowing the boot up. If you are getting a windows screen though I don't suspect this of being the problem. Try the Format C: command and reinstall OS again and see if that helps resolve the issue.
