Newcastle upon Tyne, Knapton has spent much of his life working with
concrete. He has invented a device to stop vandals knocking over
gravestones. He has helped develop a fireproof lining for the Channel
Tunnel. Today, the insurance group Lloyds, has employed him to assess
the collapse of the World Trade Center to find out what part the design
played. Knapton is passionate about this stuff, which he says is
"basically cement with dirt", and insists that his beloved material "has
had more of an impact on eradicating contagious diseases than the entire
