Well in the last contest our club finished either in 2-3rd out of 8. If you count divs which the contest did not (dumb rule) then we would finish in 2nd.

this year the contest has taken a huge step back and we may not enter it. they have reduced the number of stocks down from 10-5 because and I quote " many clubs found it difficult to pick 10 stocks".

out of thousands of stocks, people found it difficult, they could not just pick stocks in a certain sector or in their community. failing that get a dartboard.

anyways they may allow TSX venture stocks in and if they do our club will not go in. many of these stocks have small volume and trying to buy in $20K could take days, or a month or two. One TSX/venture stock I was following had $1900 cdn. worth of stock traded, on an average day. it took 14 trades to hit the big $1900.

anyways my selections for the contest (decide in December) were:

Nov 15, 2002 all trade TSX

XIU $36.65 $37.50 Nov 22.
this just tracks the TSX/SP 60 the main index in Canada, MER .18 low, and since most of the clubs could not beat the index why not the same this year. also think the CDN. equity market may actually go up in 2003 of coarse thought the same in 2002.

Rider Resources RRI .69 .75 nov 22, 2002
this is a junior oil/gas stock that trades on the TSX, bought some between .62-.65, a growing junior, however I have sold 75% of my position at .77 hit a high of .78.

Rider should make .20 cents in cashflow so if I put a 4multiple that gets me a target of .80 cents cdn. a share. if it is at .75 cents or higher will vote against the stock not much upside. however if it falls to .70 or below will buy it.

good junior with management and land positions in western Canada. and good and growing cashflow, just believe it is almost fully valued.

will consider other juniors like Keywest, Compton, Gauntlet, Cavell, Rio alt International. have not position in these at present.

thanks

doing fine Time to Make $$ and hope you are as well, having a good relaxing holiday, last month have had fun :( with browsers and some microsoft bugs (thousands in windows and I ran across a few hundred) and then there is those bloody pop up ads. everything is good now though....

as for the contest the XIU was selected as an index stock will not be the worse or the best stock we pick. the index beat most clubs last year and we did not much better.

Rider was shot down, just wanted the club to select a junior oil/gas wether it be Rider, Keywest(going to be taken over by Viking), Thunder, Rio int., Compton......ect. KVL.

everyone wanted to go for bank stocks, the cdn. bank stocks are a good long term investment but tried to argue that they may have some risks and we should not put the whole portfolio on them.

believe the stocks we selected were

Transalta
XIU TSX/SP 60
TD Bank
BMO
Manitoba tel.

remember cannot count divs. Russel did not make the list the stock trades below book, below 10X next years earnings, pays over 4% yield so you get paid to wait. great balance sheet and no one much cares. voted for it, not even close, it may sit in the $4.90-$5.10 range but the stock looks to have decent value.

by the way some stocks overvalued stand Zi Corp (TSX), and Ballard (fuel cells) of coarse quite a few people are turning negative on the stock which concerns me, but both have no profits and large market cap compared to their revenue.

we are currently in fourth out of 8-10 clubs.

Rider resources was taken over the last trade on the TSX was $1.92 in Feb. in my first post stated .62-.68, it should have read $1.62-$1.68. the stock spiked up to $2.25 and traded in the $2.15-$2.25 range for a week, before moving below $2.

club price when it was suggested was $1.68, for a gain of 14.2% to the end of Feb (last trade).

looking at other juniors.

wish Rider and Russel metals were both selected, however small caps are often ignored. Russel hit over $5.60, now around $5.40. good defensive stock with earnings and 5% yield. worse stocks out there.

also Keywest, Compton, KVL have done well Gauntlet has not, and not longer own the stock or looking at it, reserves are a concern...water. and the stock has not performed well of late.

hope you are doing well Redsfann.

the club is currently in 2nd out of (8-10 clubs), the top 3 groups are beating the index TSX/SP 60. Many of the shareclubs picked Bombardier which was a broken stock with no earnings, but a few years ago it would be considered a great blue chip . The stock has cratered.

Rus/TSX is still cheap and a decent defensive play and KVL/TSX (Cavell is just cheap) junior oil/gas company
