Cotto favored over Mosley in WBA title fight
Nov. 6, 2007
WBA Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto is favored to successfully defend his title against ?Sugar? Shane Mosley on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
betED.com has Cotto as a 150-moneyline favorite to beat Mosley, the underdog at +130. betED.com is also offering an over/under rounds bet: Over 10.5 rounds (-250), Under 10.5 (+200).
This Saturday?s bout, which features the former three-division champion Mosley (44-4, 37 KO's) taking on the undefeated Cotto (30-0, 25 KO's), is being hyped as the fight of the year in boxing.
Many are comparing the matchup to the 1990 classic between Meldrick Taylor and Julio Cesar Chavez. Just like that fight, Cotto, 27, is a hot young fighter, while Mosley, 36, is the wily veteran looking for what might be his last title shot.
Cotto is coming off an impressive win over Zab Judah in June. Cotto pounded the faster Judah and wound up with an 11th-round TKO victory.
Cotto is considered a very fast power puncher who will take the fight to his opponent and rarely goes to a decision. His last fight to go to decision was his unanimous decision victory over Paulie Malignaggi, also in New York.
Mosley is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Luis Collazo in an interim welterweight title bout. He's won his past five fights in a row including two over Fernando Vargas.
In September, 2003, Mosley beat Oscar De La Hoya by unanimous decision in a rematch of their epic bout in 2000, which Mosley won by split decision.
Cotto believes Mosley?s age will work against him on Saturday.
"I don't think at the age of 36, Shane can handle [me]," Cotto said confidently.
As he usually does, Mosley has been privately preparing for this fight in Big Bear, California, as he hopes to regain his former lofty status in the ring.
He?s also excited to be fighting in the famous MSG in Manhattan.
"It's going to be a great feeling to be in Madison Square Garden to fight where all the legendary fighters fought," said Mosley. "You know, Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, all the great fighters fought in this arena.
?And for me to fight in there in the big arena with Miguel Cotto who is a great Puerto Rican fighter, young fighter, coming up, this is history in the making. And I love to be in these types of fights, with the crowd screaming."
