Countdown To Selection Sunday
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
Depending on when you?re reading this, Selection Sunday is nine (or less) days away and you can feel the heat getting turned up on campuses all over the US. If you?re a ?bubble? team, then you know all about the heat, as each game and maybe even each shot puts you either closer to the tournament, or completely out of it.
These next nine days are the appetizer for the full meal coming when March Madness hits?but for the sports fan and sports bettor, this dash for an invite to the big kids table is a blast.
Let?s look at a handful of these ?bubble? teams and where they?re at heading into a weekend of ?must-win? games.
Who?s sweating?
Villanova, that?s who. The Cats took care of the business they needed to vs. South Florida and now need to finish off the season with a business-like victory at Providence.
That game is Saturday, March 8th.
Odds To Win the Championship: 100-1
Syracuse: They need to win out and keep winning in the Big East Tournament, at least getting to the semis. Their last regular season game is on Saturday at home vs. Marquette, and yes, this is a ?must-win? or else situation.
Odds To Win the Championship: 200-1
Virginia Tech: They?ve played their way into contention and now can almost see the invitation?but first they have to win on the road at Clemson and hope the committee doesn?t look to closely at their non-conference schedule.
Odds To Win the Championship: 150-1
Maryland: Last week they blew a 20-point second half lead at home (to Clemson). That alone should keep them out, but they still have a shot. First, of course, they need to win their final game of the season on Sunday at Virginia, then they?re going to have to win a couple of games in the ACC Tournament.
Odds To Win the Championship: 150-1
Who?s close
West Virginia ? They gave themselves a huge boost by beating Pittsburgh earlier this week. If they don?t stumble in their final game of the year they should get a spot. The ?must-win? game for them is Saturday at St. John?s. Nothing less than a very impressive performance vs. St. John?s is needed.
Odds To Win the Championship: 100-1
Kansas State ? They had to win earlier this week vs. Colorado and they did, now they have to finish with a win vs. Iowa State and win at least another one in the Big 12 tourney. Look for a statement game vs. Iowa State on Saturday.
Odds To Win the Championship: 40-1
Ole Miss ? We like this team. They keep coming on and with a record of 6-3 against the RPI Top 50, they?re in good shape if they can close strong. Look for a big game against Georgia on Saturday.
Odds To Win the Championship: 100-1
