Covid is still out there

Here are my recent experiences. There are still plenty of covid cases, but the hospitalized patients seem less sick for the most part. HOWEVER, some people are still hit really hard. We are also seeing a fair amount of people who had covid over the winter who now have recurrent pleural effusions. Basically, a pleural effusion is a collection of fluid (sometimes just a transparent liquid but worsening sometimes to a purulent/pus consistency). When I say recurrent, I mean these people keep getting them over and over, and the treatment can escalate up to a thoracotomy and often includes chest tubes and almost always a supplemental Oxygen requirement.

I have had one patient who received both vaccines and still had an active covid infection. She was 90 years old, and she died.

We had a 40 year old man recently with no medical history other than covid in February. He was hospitalized three times afterwards. He received in total 6 chest tubes, three thoracotomies, 1 VATS procedure, 10 units of blood that I know of, and he died last week. His wife had a baby during his last hospitalization, and one of the nurses was kind enough to take him to see the baby and his wife. This was before he became critically ill.

I had a 37 year old woman last week. She was hospitalized with covid April 13-15. She came back in on the 17th and was intubated until the 3rd of May. She is now relatively confused, she can only speak with a very raspy voice, she has extreme facial hair, she is so weak she can not even turn over, she has a Foley catheter and a rectal tube, and she has extreme anxiety. I don?t think she will ever be the same again. She has an 11 month old daughter.

I would recommend wearing a mask if you are out in public and continue to wash hands/use hand sanitizer often. Wearing a mask is not a bfd, but I know lots of people think it is. I don?t know why. Best wishes to all my madjack friends. I think we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, but ffs, wear your masks a bit longer. :0008

Thanks for the update..

I was just thinking of continuing to wear a mask no matter what the State of Va. decides.

Now..no question about it.

I am going to make it to 90 come hell or high water.

I think it?s selfish and silly to not wear a mask in public. It?s not that big of a deal. I don?t work in the covid area every shift, so this is just a brief sample. I forgot to include another man who was 42 and died last week. He had been sick since contracting covid in February. His mother died from it in March. I?m not sure why some people are hit so hard. There has to be a reason for it. Some families have been crushed.

SO sorry, Steve! Sounds like you have the genetics for a bad result should you contract it. Stay healthy!

in all fairness, mom was 86 with heart problems. My half sister has severe obesity issues, she lost 80 lbs in the hospital and still weighs 290  I really expected her to not make it. To me she is a miracle walking out of the hospital. Thank you for posting, people are walking around as if it?s all over now :0008

Sounds fairly miraculous for sure! All above examples (except the 90 year old) had no medical history!

My mask days are almost over. I wore mask for almost 14 months, but now I only wear when forced to by a business I am patronizing. If it is something I can?t buy somewhere else, I?ll wear the mask. Otherwise, I patronize mask optional establishments.

Half a million residents in New Orleans. 1 person is murdered daily. Far less than 1 person is dying daily of covid since last August. I don?t walk around in fear of being shot, so why would I be concerned about a disease with more favorable daily death rate?

Severely flawed logic. Idgaf if you wear a mask or not; I?m just reporting real life first hand facts. Think about this... covid numbers are under-reported. All examples above, the cod is not covid when in reality it is. No covid, they don?t die.

A quick search shows over 700 deaths in New Orleans. How is that less than one a day?

Cie, you are a liberal now. Liberal is all about the self, and not wearing one is selfish, thus you are a liberal.

I have never been a proponent of fear or scare tactics. I think they are ineffective as a whole. You should be concerned Bc you not wearing a mask might mean that you contract it and pass on to someone not as fortunate and healthy as you who then gets sick and dies. It?s also your prerogative to not wash your hands (after you take a dump) before you eat. Maybe the 💩 germs won?t make you sick. Take a shot. I?m sure people in the dark ages would have been appalled if you told them to wash their hands just as you are by being encouraged to wear a mask.

Also, I?m all for you having a gun on your pocket while in New Orleans in case a thug approaches. Seriously, I am. Wear your mask and carry your gun. Never know when covid or a thug will approach.

He's a lost cause on logic, but I can't let this part go by. Do you really believe the Liberals are all about the self? Maybe I'm nuts, but aren't liberals supposed to be wealth re-distribution socialists that are overly concerned with the environment and gay rights?

When have you ever seen the poor or middle class benefit economically under liberal rule? Sounds good but it has failed historically.

Country did great under Clinton (more jobs created than any other President if I remember correctly). Bush handed off an economic meltdown to Obama, which he turned into the longest economic expansion in US history.

So, I think you're on to something but you have the parties mixed up.

Each and every time a liberal was in charge in your lifetime that's when, the thing about history is it is recorded for posterity.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin tested positive for COVID-19 in what was called a ?breakthrough? case because he is fully vaccinated, the team announced before Tuesday?s game against the Rays.

Aaron Boone said there are other staff members and coaches whose tests are ?still pending?? and some staff members were sent home.

More vaccine's on the way. :0008

I still see people walking down the street alone and driving alone with a mask on. For a so called pandemic that has a death rate of less than 1%. Most of those with comorbidity. You cant be to safe!
