Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)

Steve Stricker to win 33/1 e.w. available generally
Rather struggling to find any plays this week, but given that this field is less than 3/4 the size of a normal Tour field, there should be some value in these odds. Winning may continue to prove elusive for Stricker, but he does put himself into contention on a regular basis: he has three top-5 finishes already this season and has finished no worse than 11th in three of his last five events. He is not a frequent competitor in this event, but was lying in 2nd place with one round to play last time here (2005) and his last two events in Texas have yielded finishes of 3rd and 9th, SO there should be hope that he finishes in the places once again.

Anthony Kim to win 40/1 e.w. available generally
Once again, Kim makes his course debut (though a year he was invited to Colonial Country Club a year ago as a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award), but with two top-5 finishes in three PGA Tour starts in Texas and three top-5 finishes in his last six Tour starts, he is a difficult player to ignore. A player who ranks 5th in All-Around Ranking and 11th in Actual Scoring Average on the PGA Tour, but is 40/1 against this weak field, is certainly worthy of attention.

Jason Gore to win 200/1 e.w. @ BlueSq
A very speculative play on a player who has proven that he can win tournaments. He has only sporadically showed the the form that brought him so much attention in 2005, but a 19th place finish in the Houston Open last month and a 23rd place finish in the Players Championship two weeks ago are indications that some of that form is returning. But it is primarily his opening 66 last year when making his course debut that makes his odds seems attractive this week. He was forced to retire during the 2nd round with an elbow injury sustained by hitting a tree root earlier in the day. And it was not simply that he was in good form at the time: that withdrawal was in a run of six consecutive events without reaching the weekend. He is clearly playing better this year and can hopefully reproduce his 1st round form of 12 months ago.

Not a good sign that nothing sticks out as of yet

I do like Triplet over Owen. Kirk had a top 25 2 weeks ago at the players and has like 4 top 20s here in his last 7 events. Owen has missed his last 4 cuts and 10 out of 13 and has never played here. So that will more than likely be one.

Okay, so maybe everything isn't bigger in Texas. For one, Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth remains one of the last fleeting bastions of golf's bygone era. At just a hair over 7,000 yards, it's one of the few golf courses on the PGA TOUR circuit that has refused to alter its layout to offset the distance boom. And, really, why would it, when its list of recent and past champions includes fairways-and-greens types like Kenny Perry, Steve Flesch, Nick Price, Tom Watson, Corey Pavin, and Ben Crenshaw? Like Texas, why mess with a good thing? Perhaps that's why most of the golfers with modern swings and prodigious drives have opted out of this week's festivities. You won't see Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, or Adam Scott hitting howitzers off the tee boxes this week, but you will see course managers like Jim Furyk, Scott Verplank, and David Toms. It all makes for a nice, quaint weekend at the Crowne Plaza Invitational deep in the heart of Texas.

The Favorites
On name value alone, Furyk is far and away the cream of this crop. He's slumped a little bit this year, however (he's yielded the No. 2 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings to Phil Mickelson), and just one of his four career top 10s at Colonial have come in his last five trips. Trevor Immelman is another highly-touted player you might view as a favorite, but he, too, is sliding down the world rankings this year, hasn't carded a top ten in his last four PGA TOUR events, and has never teed it up at Colonial. Toms also appears to be scuffling with his game of late, but he should be considered dangerous due to his four top-10 finishes at this event in his last seven tries. We had high hopes for Stewart Cink last week at his home course, but he remains an intriguing play this week at Colonial, where he tied for fourth place a year ago and has never missed the cut in 10 opportunities. Verplank is a Dallas native who is still coming down from his high after winning the Byron Nelson earlier this year. It's tempting to install him among the favorites as he goes for the elusive Texas two-step, but he's a bit of a longshot considering he has never finished inside the top 10 in 17 trips to Colonial.

The Best of the Rest
Under normal circumstances, Kenny Perry would have been the first player mentioned in the previous paragraph. He has two wins and a runner-up at Colonial C.C. in the last five years, but his recent play leaves much to be desired. He hasn't registered a top 10 since people were shorter and lived closer to water, so suffice it to say he's a tough nut to crack this week. The same can be said of Justin Leonard, who has been all but forgotten in recent years. He has five top-10 finishes on his Hogan's Alley resume, but he's played so poorly this year it's tough to get too excited about his historical success. A trio of mid-range fantasy options have also played well at this event in years past. Peter Lonard (top-four each of the last two years), Stephen Ames (top-four two of the last three years), and Rod Pampling (top-six each of the last two years) all represent solid fantasy choices this week. Don't forget about Rory Sabbatini just yet, either. He's cooled down a bit in recent weeks, but he might have some fight left in him at Colonial, where he has two top-six finishes in the last four years.

Who's Hot?
Matt Kuchar: While he's not exactly on fire, Kuchar's tie for third last week was an encouraging sign. He's now made four straight cuts and shot par or better in six of his last seven rounds.

Stephen Marino: Colonial may not play to the strengths of a long bomber, but Marino ranks seventh on TOUR in driving distance and has three top 10s in 14 events this year, including two in the last month.

Who's Not?
Kenny Perry: Perry has just one finish of better than T32 this season and has gone 37 events since his last top 10.

Justin Leonard: Justin has missed the cut eight times in 12 tries this season and hasn't recorded a top 10 since February of last year ? a span of 35 tournaments.

Player Trends
It's not a fool-proof indicator of future success, but golfers who fare well at a particular venue tend to do so time and again. With that in mind, we provide a list of players who have notable trends at this week's event (most recent results are listed first).

The Good
Bo Van Pelt (T12, T17, T5)
Kenny Perry (T37, Win, T12, Win, T2)
David Toms (T30, T3, T44, WD, T2, T8, T4)

Justin Leonard (T56, T26, T14, 2, T19, T5, 61, T39, T8, T13, T10, T5)

The Bad
Carl Pettersson (Cut, Cut, T54, T28)
Tom Pernice Jr. (Cut, Cut, 60, Cut T55, T33)
Heath Slocum (Cut, T32, Cut, Cut, Cut)
John Rollins (Cut, Cut, Cut, T48)
J.J. Henry (T68, Cut, Cut, Cut, T68)

The Ugly

Reading Sabbotinis comments about burn out and mental fatigue worry me a little bit. I would hedge but its a 3 player match. I dont think Couchs game fits this course at all. hmm.. Id be careful with rory this week

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Outrights:

Olin Browne(125/1) e.w.
- - Beware the injured golfer, with a slot on the Wall of Champions and a Tuesday birthday thrown in. http://www.ajc.com/news/content/sports/golf/stories/2007/05/20/0521classnote.html

Jerry Kelly(35/1) e.w.
- - The process has had him playing at a completely different level . . . now an interesting look at what's short haul and what's long haul, what's the line of demarcation for looking to take one step back before looking for one step forward (if that's what develops), etc. . . . By the way, I always meant to comment that I thought his ace at Harbour Town was unbelievably amusing: Kelly is always leaning and contortining and talking to his ball before he even finishes his backswing, and in this instance he quickly leaned one way, and then back the other, then had this look of confusion about not knowing how to react as the shot bore down on the flag. A classic.

Peter Lonard(50/1) e.w.
- - A value loser seems bang on this week.

Anthony Kim(33/1) e.w.
- - Colonial seems a tough spot for a near teen, but maybe that's not the case.

Rory Sabbatini(25/1) e.w.
- -

Justin Leonard(125/1) e.w.
- - Some of us got our wish . . . yeah, right.
