Has anyone here put a rooftop antenna on their house?

Did you install yourself or have a pro do it?

How much for antenna and/or installation?

I emailed a local company that specializes in this & they also do dish installations(not interested). The following is a portion of the response I received from them...

"A lot depends on your location and what you might want as a system, as a signal booster or rotor
motor added on. Generally in your town a good high gain antenna with signal
booster will get quite a bit of channels, roughly 36 to 42 channels, costs
$785.00 with installation."

If I do this I would just need to pay for internet, Netflix(already have, daughter pays for it I rarely use).
At that price, it would pay for itself in 6 months.

Any other info or tips would be appreciated. Would LOVE to stop sending money to Comcast! :0002:sadwave:

I put an antenna - the large, outside kind - in my attic when I built my house. This was back in 2003 - when local channels were in HD, but Directv didn't have them on their satellite yet. I did this myself - you just have to lug it up into the attic and unfold it and set it up. The key was, I had a coax run into the attic from a distribution box in the basement when I built. Running the coax is always the tough part. You will likely have a distribution type box somewhere (if you have multiple TV's).

The website www.antennaweb.org is very helpful and will give you a ton of info - which channels you'll be able to get, etc. One of the best things was that it had compass coordinates for exact aiming of the antenna. Very helpful. Depending on where the various stations have their antenna farms, you may or may not need a rotor. Rotors are a pain in the butt - having to move the antenna to watch various stations - and obviously a rotor won't work if you'd put the antenna in the attic.

Lastly, you'll want to consider getting a TIVO (PVR) that will allow you to record over the air TV. These run in the $300-$400 range typically and record multiple stations at once. They have different deals - some with a cheaper TIVO and you pay monthly fees (the fee is for the program guide they send, so you can record) or sometimes you buy the TIVO and they give you lifetime service.
