In my opinion this is awesome info to get out there. This I think is a repost but informative.

I stress to my customers who want to buy 3 new tires on a 2000 vehicle and use their spare as a 4th that "hey you do realize that it's 16 years old now and should not even be used as a spare?" They see it as saving money because they don't have to buy a 4th Tire. If anyone ever asks to use their spare as a 4th there is a disclaimer written on their repair order that they have been informed of this and against our advice are using it and we assume no liability.

Some customers when you show them the dry rot on the tires but they have great tread, just don't care. They think you are just trying to sell them tires.

It's all about documentation and covering your ass. I only get tires on a customer order basis and the dates are usually within a few months of manufacture.

Prime example today! This is what "trying to save a few bucks" gets ya! I gave this customer Tire prices two weeks ago. Our price includes mounting, balancing, and a new valve stem. This guy gets on some online tire warehouse to save a few bucks and buys a set of Pirelli P7 tires and has them shipped to my garage. So now I'm going to charge him $15 a tire to put them on. So add that $63.60 to what he paid online. I unbundled the tires today and they are smashed first of all because the binding was so tight, and put on crooked that it actually molded the rubber, and second they were manufactured in January of 2011. So this guy is putting 5 year old tires on to save a few bucks. I can also guarantee you that once mounted up and he gets out on the road they are going to have road noise because they are really out of round.

The tire stores around here used to retread car tires but have stopped that because of liability reasons. I think the manufacturers still do it for rig tires but not 100 percent sure because we only deal in automotive tires, and we deal with distributors, not directly with the manufacturers.
