John Dromo was the Louisville basketball coach The year before he had Wes Unseld and Butch Beard. He was an outstanding coach for them Then my freshman at North Texas State we were playing Louisville year, but both those guys graduated to the NBA and Dromo had Price, Grosso and Bacon and a few others I can't remember. North Texas lost its top player Winfield to the NBA. North Texas played in the Men Gym which holds 4.500 . It was the best home court advantage in the entire country. I always sit with all my buddies in the same seats but somehow I got to the game late and had to sit right behind the Louisville bench and sat one row from their coach John Dromo. Louisville was ranked 10th or 11th and think were 12-0 before they played NT. The home court dominated and North Texas upset Louisville 98-80 . I watched this little round coach Dromo go nuts screaming, kicking the bleaches and doing the " ma fa Coulee" to the crowd. An Italian gesture that none of the 4,500 fans saw or understood , But I did. North Texas beat and blew out the No 9 team in the country right out of Denton,Texas I loved watching Dromo try to get his team inspired to no avail . But I think he had an effect on me. I wanted to be like him someday . Maybe not in college but coaching basketball.
That summer I went back to NY and read Louisville Coach John Dromo had a massive heart attack and was being replaced. Crum was an asst at UCLA and replaced Dromo.
So now Louisville is ranked 9th coming to Denton under a new coach I;m telling everyone this team is Dromo's players and recruits. Crum hasn't earned his strips yet .
So now North Texas freshman team is playing a juco school team from Oklahoma before tonights big game. The louisville team walks into an empty gym watching the freshman play. I remember all the Cardinals players had Maroon turtle necks and blue blazers.
They all came in together and Crum was sitting all by himself under the bleachers. So I walked over and sat next to him I asked him how Coach Dromo was doing. He looked at me surprised and told me he was in rehab and doing better, I told Crum that last year he had an impact on me as I sat right behind him in the blowout upset. Crum told me the Missouri Valley conference basketball is one of the best .Last year his UCLA team won by 4 vs Drake in the final 4 I also remember him saying many of my players played in this gym last year you call " the Pit" He said it doesn't look to intimidating right now I said in about 90 minutes when people start pouring in you'll see . He laughed . Many times because of the crowd noise the players cannot hear the whistle and will play on. He was aware of the home court advantage and I thought tonight will be a close game. And I can't remember who won that game that night . I knew the year before we won 98-80 We were 14-0 my freshman year but think we were 12-2 my sophmore year. anyway it was nice sitting by ourselves for that half an hour,
So now 20 years later Crum is the guest speaker at the NY State Basketball clinic in Binghamton NY. After his speech I go up to him and remind him of our 1st meeting in Denton . I asked him about Coach Dromo and he tells me he passed away 2 years ago. I don't think he remembered me but pretended too . I was wrong about Denny Crum. I thought he took over a winning program but he became a hall of fame coach more successful then the guy he replaced. So Rest in Peace Coach Crum and thank you for spending some time with a freshman in college and later a HS coach

I agree and I was one of the 1st not to give him the credit he was due. And many years later I was selected as one of the top principals in my county. 3 others principals were also selected to fly to Louisville Kentucky for a educational conference. I actually looked up John Dromo's family and talked to his daughter .. I also got busted at the Louisville Hillerrich & Bradberry Bat factory which was around the corner from our hotel . I got on line and ordered a bat . They make them there at the factory , They asked me my name so being a phillie fan I said Richie Allen . The lady taking the orders said " can I see some identification . You can't have a bat made for you especially any current major league player or retired one .I was going to say Mickey Mantle .. but I do have a Hillerich and Bradsbury Mantle so Richie was my next favorite superstar. I also have an Adirondack Mike Schmidt bat. Have no idea what these are worth ..
But your right D-2 he was not given the credit he was due.

I started following college basketball early in 1986. Of course, in those days, very few games were televised. But I must have seen a Louisville game, because they quickly became my favorite team. I don't think they were one of the top teams in the country at the time, so I'd like to believe I wasn't jumping on the bandwagon. Could be wrong. Anyway, I was so happy when they made the NC game and it was one of the rare times I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime.

Of course, I absolutely loved "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison, a freshman who really earned his nickname. I also remember Kenny Payne, who was just so damn smooth, and Milt Wagner, who was a solid guard.

RIP Coach Crum

Think Milt Wagner still holds every scoring record in New Jersey in High School Think he went to Camden HS ..In 1969-70 North Texas was 18-8 and wasn't invited to the NIT's but louisville was despite losing to North Texas. They picked Louie due to Mike Grosso their center who was from Rariton NJ and they thought he was more of a local draw. NT got snubbed. Now how the hell can I remember where Mike Grosso came from and yet today I still had trouble finding where my car was parked at Costco today ..My wife gets on my case saying " what row ,where etc. Next time she says something I think I might say " honey do you know where Mike Grosso came from. " ? She will say" who the hell is Mike Grosso " I also remember Louisiville's Guard Mike Price hitting a 15 ft jumper and he hit another from the same distance lefty . I had never seen anybody shoot jumpers rightly and lefty from that distance. That was the next year when Crum was coaching.
I need a new battery on my car key chain because the honking sound doesn't work As my father always said to me and others " son your not focused on math and science but are in History and sports. He was 100% right,

pig pen he came after and he was one hell of a player . I watched Wesley Unseld in the pro's for the Bullets and missed him when he came to Denton since he graduated the year before but his rebounding and release were the best ever in the NBA. He would be rebounding and already positioning his body and pivot for his outlet pass. He would have a 2 over hand fast break outlet pass that was on the money .. Crum was a great recruiter getting blue chip basketball players to attend Louisville. But although he was a disciple of John Wooden as an asst coach Wooden would run a 2-2-1 press full court I don;t think Crum ran that or a different version. My memory of that is " in the parking lot somewhere here in Austin. "
On another subject Vegas just put odds on next years NFL's Offensive Rookie of the year Its Bijan Robinson at I think +300 . He will win it unless one of those qb's ahead of him in the draft go to the Super Bowl

I was just a kid and I remember him receiving an ally-oop with his back to the rim and he slammed it facing the other goal.
