Not sure of the exact year but think it was in the early 80's I am waiting for the JV team to finish practice so I can have the entire gym by myself for my varsity basketball team. I must of had a game the next day and with out 7th 8th grade and JV team sharing the gym I always wanted the entire gym to my self/ I was out in the hallway in front of the gym and Michael Robbins our star 8th grader came out into the hallway for a drink of water. Practice was about to end. Our school janitor Yashou a polish immigrant who had been in the US for 40 years still spoke with a broken accent. He was a US navy veteran and had tattoo's all over his arm. He see's Micheal getting water and asks "son do you know what day it is today . Its dec 7th the day we were wiped out and slaughtered by the Japs" Micheal looked up to him and answered " and when we get them on our court we'll kick their ass's" Yashou looked at him in disbelief . Micheal thought he was talking about a team that beat my varsity basketball team" I told Yas what Micheals was talking about. Yas took his mop and bucket in disgust and walked away down the hall yelling " what do the F..k do they teach these kids today. I laughed so hard that every time its Dec 7th I think of Micheal Robbins. He has a twin brother Tyrone who was a lefty that broke his arm when he was 7 or 8 and it was never set right, Tyrone had a crooked arm and look deformed .. Being from NYC his parents were both incarcerated and was brought up in a group home. But Tyrone could shoot the eyes out of the basket way before the 3 pt line.
Yas was the janitor who after 31 years of coaching at my school .I was in the gym by myself on a late Oct day sitting on the bleacher bench were I coached all those years looking up at all my championship banners and reading them,years names of players All by myself The gym was dark since daylight saving just started and was crying realizing this would be the last time I would be sitting here since tomorrow I would be at another HS .I see the double doors open and the light from the hallway comes into the gym . Yas was coming in to mop and see's someone in the gym sitting across the floor/ He see;s it me and yells " get the f..k out of here I just mopped the hallway floors so walk to the right side". He didn't realize i was leaving for good/ I walked passed him and said something like I'll walk to the side.. So after 7 sectional titles ,3 runner ups in the state finals 6 coaches of the years awards I leave my school getting cursed out by the school janitor If I ever wrote a book or made a movie about me him licking me out would be the opening scene .
Micheal went back to NYC his jr and senior years and no one ever heard from him again . Tyrone died years ago from an overdose of heroin... crazy days
