Defending champ Kyle Busch Southern 500 favorite

The Sprint Cup Series makes a stop at the much-revered Darlington Raceway in South Carolina for the Southern 500 this weekend.

NASCAR's first superspeedway, the Darlington Raceway ? sometimes called the "Lady in Black" and the "Track Too Tough To Tame ? is celebrating 60 years of racing this weekend.

Kyle Busch, the defending champion at Darlington, is a +475 favorite to win the Southern 500 in betED.com Auto Racing Betting Odds.

Jimmie Johnson isn?t far behind at +550 odds, followed by Sprint Cup standings leader Jeff Gordon at +675 and Carl Edwards at +750.

Busch, winner of last week?s race at Richmond International Raceway, has three Sprint Cup victories this season.

Among active drivers, Gordon has the most wins at Darlington with seven, his most recent coming in 2007.

He regained the lead in the series standings after an eighth-place finish last Saturday at Richmond, and holds a 10-point advantage over Kurt Busch.

Darlington is 1.366 miles long and features an egg-shaped layout, making it one of stock car racing's most challenging tracks. The track underwent a repaving just before last year's race, which saw record qualifying speeds.

Forty-seven teams are on the preliminary entry list for this weekend?s race.

The Southern 500 was held at Darlington on Labor Day weekend annually until 2004 when the holiday event shifted to Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway). NASCAR moved the Southern 500 that year to November as part of the inaugural "Chase for the Sprint Cup" schedule.

Darlington has been a tradition in the sport since 1950, when Johnny Mantz won the first Southern 500 from the 43rd starting position in a 75-car field.
