The University of Southern California has offered their head football coaching position to Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio the LA Daily News reports late Monday night. The report says that USC sent Del Rio a contract to sign on Monday night.
Del Rio played linebacker at USC from 1981-84 and was a catcher on the baseball team in ?83 and ?84. Del Rio is 46-years old.
The report gives no indication if or when Del Rio plans on signing the contract, but it?s safe to assume there has been a discussion and negations between Del Rio and the school, although no one can confirm that at this point.
The Florida-Times Union reports that Del Rio was at the Jaguars headquarters until 10:00 p.m. ET Monday night meeting with staff and Jags general manager Gene Smith. The paper also says it?s likely Del Rio will return as head coach as the Jaguars next season.
According to Scott Wolfe of the LA Daily News however, the $15 million remaining on Del Rio?s Jaguar?s contract may determine if he quits or is fired as the Jags coach. He was name Jacksonville?s coach in 2003. In seven years as the Jags coach he is 57-55 and has taken them to the playoffs in only two season compiling a 1-2 playoff record. Jacksonville?s best year under Del Rio came in 2006 when the Jaguars finished with a 12-5 record.
He played 11 years in the NFL with New Orleans, Kansas City, Dallas and Minnesota from 1985-1995. He was drafted by the Saints in the 3rd round (68th overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft.
Sunday it was announced that Pete Carroll was resigning as head coach at USC. Monday the Seahawks announced Carroll had reached an agreement to be their next head coach and team vice president. A press conference for 10 a.m. PT is scheduled for Tuesday in Seattle. Carroll also met with USC players on Monday to discuss his departure.
