destroying a hard drive

dumping an old computer....i`ve read that it`s good to dismantle it and destroy the hard drive before disposing of the machine...

so,i go on line,go through all the steps to remove the hard drive and basically everything else that looks suspicious...

not a big problem...even for a computer illiterate...the internet is amazing...

now,smashing the hard drive was another story...i used a short handled sledgehammer,a long handled sledgehammer...and finally resorted to a dasco 3 in cold chisel to break the thing up...

now i know why it`s called a f-cking "hard" drive....those things are tougher than nails...even the plastic is incredibly tough....

hard drive is right...whew...

They basically write 0 and 1 over the whole hard drive. If you run it 7 times that is the same as Department of Defense wipe

i got the new one about a year and a half ago...had unhooked it and just had it gathering dust in the basement...because i was doing some renovation in the yard and on the house, i rented a dumpster that allows you to dispose of hazardous material...so i figured it was a good time to dump it and the old monster monitor that came with it...

the p.o.s. was infected and i was to lazy to hook it back up with all the other stuff going on....anyway,i wasn`t aware of that program...i`ll keep it in mind for the next time...thanks...

but,i was really amazed at how fricking tough those drives were...it shocked me....shit is as tough as kevlar...

that thing will get dropped into a garbage truck tied into a garbage bag and then dumped off at the dump. if somebody actually finds that thing buried in all the shit at the dump and knows how to restore it, they deserve to have all my informaton. :142smilie

if the neighbors were asleep when i went to war with that hard drive,they didn`t sleep long....

seriously...just for the hell of it...try and destroy the hard drive of the next `puter you guys decide to dump....i seriously think i could i could have gotten into the flight recorder/black box of air force one faster....

I think the whole thing is silly, but my mom is paranoid like you and she asked me to destroy one of those things about 5 years ago. If she wasn't standing there watching me I would have just tossed it and told her I destroyed it, but I ended having to actually do it. You're right, those things are extremely tough.

I've donated all my old computers - hard drive intact. No problems with that and there never will be. There is a much greater chance of some shrapnel taking your eye out as you hack that thing apart than there is getting something vital snagged by an evil-doer from an old hard drive.
