This one time at band camp........No hang on wait a minute wrong story! Why yes I did! I had a collision with a Telephone pole running about 140 mph one evening! I had just turned to look and see if the man with blue lights was still interested in talking to me when I left the road at full speed in a 1989 Ford Mustang GT convertible! Well needless to say, I FREAKED ( no pun intended )! I just thought man I am dead, and for what? This cop just wanted to see my license because there was a report of underage drinking and driving in that neighborhood where I had just been! I had been drinking but I was not Tore up! If I had only stopped I would have never even gotten a ticket! I would have just been checked and let go, but NO my dumbass had to run from the police and wreck my car and almost die!

It was a scary experience and I woke up many nights in a panic from the memories!

i had a rather colorful youth.

i have been shot once, stabbed twice, and beaten with a variety of blunt objects.

i have been in three car wrecks and two motorcycle wrecks, reducing all five vehicles to salvage.

i have gone over the falls in 15 foot hurricane surf, dropped onto a surfboard that broke in half, and then held on the bottom for about 45 seconds with four broken ribs and a ruptured abdominal wall.

i have had about a dozen major broken bones, over five hundred stitches - about a hundred from the neck up - and pack more metal screws than your average hardware store.

i have spent, at last count, a little over two hundred days of my life in various hospitals, all as a result of traumatic injuries. i have sucked more gas than a '69 vette and been x-rayed more times than an iraqi national's carry-on luggage.

in answer to your question - no, i've never thought i was going to die; what makes you ask?

Motorcycle accident one time, real close to the dirt nap on that one. If some guy coming at me wasn't paying attention and swerved into my lane, since I laid it down in his lane, it may have been curtains.
Other than that just every Sunday at halftime.

Geez, loop. You're a trauma surgeon's wet dream :D .

Years ago, while I was still a student, I had just pulled my 2nd 36hr shift on call in 4 days. Dozed off in the car while driving home in a rather heavy snow storm. Don't know how long it was, but it couldn't have been more than a couple of second. Anyways, when I woke up, my car was sliding horizontally 1/2 way in the other lane. Stupidly I hit the brakes, and turned the steering wheel the other way. My car just started spinning around in 360's (Mustang's are well know for their excellent tractions). As my car spun it's way inevitably toward the median, I actually thought "oh fawk, this is it". The only time I've ever heard myself scream as the car hit the median. Miraculously, I came out virtually unharmed, only had a little bump on my head, while the car was totalled. The copper couldn't explain it. The only way I could have survived was to be in the driver's seat, and any passengers would have been crushed was what the copper's said.

Still remember it vividly.

I had my gall bladder out 4 years ago. Simple operation but the doctor "knicked" something before closing me up so i was still bleeding internally. I was sitting in recovery for what seemed like hours. The nurses didn't know why I wasn't coming around and everytime they took me off oxygin the alarms went off. I knew I was in trouble, but for some reason I didn't care. I did end up flat lining during emergency surgery in the recovery room. I was 4 days in intensive care after that. Maybe it was the drugs or the lack of blood but I had no pain and I knew I was Fu*ked but I didn't care.

I was tossed out of a car in a roll over doing around 70 - went through a wooden gate.
Actually I've told this story so many times let me chronicle it from the beginning.

I was a Jr in Highschool the night before a football game. We had a tradition of going out to Gatti's pizza or Furr's as a team the night before games and this was no different, except

1st the kid who was driving had only had his license for three months and it was his first time to drive to pregame meal night.

2nd We stopped at this girls house on the way home because my buddy had a thing for this girl.

3rd The girl kind of blew off my buddy and started fooling around with me.

4th It was my turn to ride shotgun (3 of us) but my buddy was pissed at me and he hopped up front and got no complaints from me.

5th I made my buddy pullover so I could take a leak.

6th A car passed us doing around 70 and dropped the bird out the window. Being young and dumb we gave chase. After the fact we find out it was a buddy of ours in his uncles new car and he reckognized us but we didn't reckognize him.

7th We kept up the chase for 4 miles and had to make a decision on whether to make our turn at the subdivision or keep falling.

8th The car in front of us slammed on their brakes to turn into the highschool and our driver took it into the grass, over corrected when he hit the road and started the flip.

Whenever we talk about it, if we had made one of the decisions above differently we probably would have avoided the accident.

At this point things get a little funny so let me tell you that in the end we all turn out what could be classified as ok.

While we were in our death slide in the grass everything turned into slow motion. I didn't have my seat belt on so I grabbed the drivers and passengers head rest and held on. You only have so fast and one shot to come up with a prayer an mine was, "God, please don't let me die a virgin" As I tried to revise my prayer the roll over happened.

The next thing I remember I'm on my hands and knees. After a bit of a panic I realize that my Lungs weren't collapsed I just had the air knocked out of me. Then I realized I didn't know where the car was. So I start heading back, find a shoe and stick, it under my left arm. Then I come to my lucky Atl Braves hat and stick it under my right arm. I travers over a broke wooden gate, that I would later find out served as my cushion and see the car about 50-75 yards down the road.

I start heading towards the car, with no sign of my friends. I'm within 20 yards or so when I'm interupted by someone saying, "Are you alright." I turn away from the wreck to find a good samaritan has stopped to help us. She tells me that she is an off duty nurse and that she can help us. She briefly begins examing the lacerations around my face, when we hear, "Oh shit, there's a fire" The woman's eyes leave my face and look over my left shoulder. I will never forget how white she turned and no actor could ever duplicate the genuine look of fright that she had. She murmured, "Oh my God, he doesn't even know he lost it." My buddy, had lost his leg to cancer when he was 10, and had been using crutches to get around for the last 6 years. He was our center/nose guard/ deep snapper and also played third base on the baseball team. All of this I explained to the poor nurse who had never expected a kid to crawl out of a mangled wreck and start hopping towards safety. All of this with my shoe was under one arm, my hat under the other, Compressed fracture of the T12 and T13, and a lip that was torn to the nose. Even today I'm surprised that the plastic surgeon was able to reconstruct this handsome mug. :)

More than once.

More than once.

1st time is when I was about 9. I was swimming in our above ground pool in Vegas. Anyway to get in/out of the pool you had to use a pool ladder. Well I was swimming in & out (like a snake)of the rungs below the waterline & I got stuck & panicked.
I thought I was going to drown & almost did.

2nd time I was driving my Honda Shadow down Boulder Hwy here in Vegas (at night) in the far right line about 55-60 mph.
A TR7 pulled next to me (he was in the emergency lane) I have NO clue where he came from next thing you know he hit the right side of my bike
both I & my passenger reached our right arms through his window, that was rolled down (thank GOD) and held on to his car & let the bike go (instinct). After he finally skided to a halt we open our eyes & see the oncoming traffic heading towards us. Lucky they had time to stop.I then turned around and looked at the driver of the TR7 & he looked like the devil himself complete with goatee & smelled of Jack dainels BIGTIME!!
3 Mexicans got out of their Chevy smoking a joint and ask us if we wanted them to kick his ass. We didn't & they didn't.
Anyway bike was totalled but we didn't even get scraped but my knees shook for about a a hour or so.

I have since bought another bike but don't ride it much.
Had a best friend get killed on his Interceptor 2 days after Xmas.

3rd time when I was young & stupid we were in a Buick Skylark w/ a 454 engine driving on a paved road in the middle of nowhere (heading towards Searchlight Nevada) anyway it was pitch dark, we were stoned & drunk so we get up to @ 120-125 & turned the headlights off & started counting. Well @ the 4th time we got up to 8 we turn the lights on & this BIG ASS night owl was taking off from the middle of the road with a wing span bigger than the width of the Buick.
Holey moley I though we would hit him & kill us.

the time senor capper threatened to kick my ass.

one time when I drank really cold milk on a hot summer day.

once when I was stabbed and beaten by a gang that goes by the name of two six, on chicagos south side.

last time I drank wolfschmidt vodka.

every time I eat at Wendy's.

the one time I drank about 22 beers and ate a jar of pickles, because they were sitting on the hors douvre (sp?) tray where my wife was throwing up.

When I was cliffjumping I pussed out and was hanging onto a branch really high in the air if the branched snapped or I let go of it I would have smacked into jagged rocks.

Wow, loophole remind me to never ask you for a lift !

My story is nothing compared to loophole, but here it is anyway.I was in sales in 1985 & had a few appt's one Saturday morning in New Jersey. On my drive out to Jersey I started developing severe pain in the left part of my chest & left arm. I thought for sure that I was having a heart attack. I didn't know what to do, either pull off rte.9 & read the newspaper & just wait to die or keep going to my appt's & let whatever happen, happen. Being money-hungry & stupid I decided to keep my appt's.
On my way home I stopped at a Brooklyn hospital & after numerous tests was told the I had a peptic ulcer.

while goofing around a pool in 1986, I dove in awkwardly & hit my head on the bottom breaking my neck & instantly paralyzing me. Actually laid on the bottom unable to breathe with my brain screaming for oxygen until I had no choice but to gulp in mouth fulls of water until unconscious, no actually dead. I guess I actually passed thinking I was going to die, to actually dying, pretty wild experience.

Eventually someone pulled my ass out and paramedics brought me back. Not all the way though, have never moved below the neck since that day. Paralyzed from the neck down since June 30, 1986.
