For a college team to defeat a pro team
For example today I was having a discussion with someone and I said I bet Oklahoma the way they are playing now could beat the Arizona Cardinals. The guy looked at me like I had 10 heads. He said Impossible. He brought up the fact that pro teams are the made of the best of college players....yada.. yada. I don't know with that sooner defense playing the way they are who knows. It would be fun to watch though.

Snake P,

When I was a youngster (early 50's), I think they always had the the college champ play an NFL team. I forget the exact arrangement, but I'm almost positive college played pro.

Arch Ward, the sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, in 1934 came up with the idea of a pre-season game between the NFL champions and a team of college all-stars to benefit the newspaper's charity fund. All of the games were played at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The first meeting, on Aug. 31, 1934, ended in a scoreless tie. In the early years, the college players did pretty well against the pros. The NFL champions dominated in later years, however, losing only once after 1955.

In 1976, the game was suspended and finally called off because of a heavy rainstorm late in the third quarter, with the Pittsburgh Steelers holding a 24-0 lead.

That was the last game of the series. There were two main reasons for the demise. First, pro football salaries had reached a much higher level, many college players who were unwilling to take part in the game for fear of injury. Second, fan interest had declined substantially because of the NFL's dominance

If they played now it would be a bloodbath. Detroit would destroy Oklahoma, let alone a team like KC.

Without a doubt, the best college football team ever was the 1972 USC football team. That year, many people thought they would beat a bad Pro Football team. NOT CONTEND! Never before 1972 did they think a college team could be mentioned like an NFL team. I think they had 6 1st rounders on that team and many went in the NFL.

11-0 season, and blew out everyone. Closest game was a 9pt win against Stanford. Remember, this was 1972!

That 1972 team was the first team in college football history to recieve "unanimous" votes from both polls. HUGE HUGE DEAL IN 1972! Got every single first place vote.

Beat a top 5 WOODY HAYES OHIO ST. team 42-17 in Rose Bowl.

In that Rose Bowl game, USC was near the goal line, and head coach McKay whistled his FB Sam Bam Cunningham, pulled him by the jersey with one hand on sideline, then other hand waved back and forth towards across the field to Woody Hayes, then he motioned OVER THE TOP with his hand. Sent out Cunningham, and Cunningham went over the top and scored a TD. McKay was telling Hayes the play, and said STOP IT!

That was classic!

FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!

'95 Nebraska would've rolled '72 USC. I realize you are a fan and that they were a great team, but saying that Trojan team was better than the Husker juggernaut was is a joke. And since you're comparing scores, Nebraska knocked off undefeated No. 2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl (not to mention the fact that they pulled a Bobby Stoops-esqse kneel-down on the 1 near the end of the game to not run up the score). Closest game was 14 points, 35-21 over Wash. State, and averaged 55 points a game.

No way. Florida could not stop the run. Woody Hayes team was much better coached and very good on defense. Florida was horrible against the run and a finesse team.

Nebraska was too 1 dimensional and USC had better athletes. Look at the NFL draft of both years. USC 1972 got a lot more press than the 1995 Nebraska team. Also USC beat top ranked opponents during the season. @ ND, and UCLA (was very tough back then) and others.

Don't get me wrong, i loved that 1995 Nebraska team, but they were not better.

think the whole point is this...nowadays if any college football team.....played any NFL team they would get smoked......absolutely drilled

think that sums everything up :p

infact I think every NFL team could get to 100 points if they didn't let up..........scores like 100-14 would not be uncommon....

Keith Jackson, who's forgotten more about college football than we'll ever know, said the '72 Trojans were the best ever.

Just thought i throw that out there. I actually am not a big fan of Keith Jackson. I think he is bias against USC.

FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1972 TROJANS: COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S GREATEST TEAM

By Richard Tilton

Following a 44-3 defeat by USC in 1972, Jim Sweeney, head coach of the Washington State Cougars told Trojan head coach John McKay, "You ve got the second best team in the country, John. The Miami Dolphins are still a little better."

The USC Trojan Football squad was the best team in USC history and arguably the best in College Football history. The facts speak for themselves.

The Trojans completed a perfect 12-0 season winning unanimous # 1 rankings in both the AP and UPI polls.

The team s players filled the NFL s rosters with draft picks 10 in 1973, 9 in 1974 and 14 in 1975. Before the days of going pro early, the 1972 squad had 33 players who were drafted during these 3 years including 5 first round picks!

There were 5 Trojans who made at least one All-American team in 1972. Another 10 Trojans would make All-American roosters in the next two seasons.

McKay s team averaged 39 points a game and gave up only 12 points, an average winning margin of 27 points!

In the season opener, Arkansas, a preseason top 10 pick in the polls, was very concerned about the # 4 ranked Trojans. Their scout said, "When we line up against USC, every one of our men is going to face the best player he s ever seen." How prophetic. USC devastated the Razorbacks in Little Rock 31-10. After the game the Trojans moved to # 1 in the national polls where they would remain through the entire season.

The Trojans followed up its initial win by consecutively annihilating Oregon State, 51-6; Illinois, 55-20; and Michigan State, 51-6.

USC fell behind to only one opponent during the entire season. USC trailed in Palo Alto, during the first half, as Stanford recovered a fumble in the endzone. Stanford was defending its conference championship and had won two consecutive Rose Bowls. The Cardinal made it closer than it actually was with a touchdown and two point conversion in the final two minutes as USC won 31-21. Even though the Trojans had 407 yards in offense to Stanford s 183, that was as close as it got in 1972.

The Trojans clinched the Rose Bowl berth in a 24-7 victory over UCLA. They followed that up with a humiliation of powerful Notre Dame 45-23 in the regular season finale. Every Trojan fan should be familiar with Anthony Davis scoring 6 touchdowns in that game, two on kickoff returns.

The crowning monument to the perfect campaign came as the Trojans met the # 3 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl on New Year s day. At half time the score was tied 7-7. Characteristic of great teams, the Trojans were at their best in big games. The Trojans scored touchdowns on the first five possessions of the second half and cruised to a 42-17 victory. Sam

Bam Cunningham will be forever remembered for his 4 diving touchdowns.

The Trojans certainly had their standout players:

Sophomore linebacker Richard Wood was a devastating tackler with 4.5 speed in the 40 and would soon become a four-time All-American

Charles Young a ferocious blocker who paved the way for long gainers by Anthony Davis and Rod McNeil on sweeps

Sam Cunningham, superb both as a lead blocker and a bruising ball carrier in short yardage situations

Offensive lineman Pete Adams, a crushing blocker and Defensive lineman John Grant, always in the right spot at the right time

Steady quarterbacks Mike Rae and Pat Haden

Receivers J. K. McKay and future NFL Hall of Famer, Lynn Swan.

Was this awesome squad the best team ever, not only in USC history but also in college football history? In referring to his awesome 1972 team, John McKay said with a grin:

"I never saw a team that could beat it."

any NFL team would smoke any college team or team of all stars. Any NBA team would do the same. I could, however see a college baseball team beat a MLB team.
