Prosecutor: Lawyer Helped Terror 'Jailbreak'

Wednesday, December 29, 2004

NEW YORK ? A lawyer and two co-defendants helped an imprisoned Egyptian sheik commit a sort of "jailbreak" by allowing him to get around prison rules and feed messages to terrorists overseas, a prosecutor told a federal jury Wednesday.

In his closing argument, assistant U.S. attorney Andrew Dember asked the jury to convict the three of a conspiracy to overcome the government's effort to silence the still "powerful and influential" prisoner, Omar Abdel-Rahman.

Civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart and her co-defendants, Ahmed Abdel Sattar and Mohamed Yousry, testified they obeyed the law in the work they did for Abdel-Rahman.

The blind sheik, who entered the United States in 1990, is serving a life prison sentence for his 1995 conviction for inspiring plots to assassinate Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (search) and blow up New York City landmarks.

Dember told jurors the three defendants in effect "broke Abdel-Rahman out of jail, made him available to the worst kind of criminal we find in this world ? terrorists."

Stewart represented Abdel-Rahman at his trial, while Sattar served as a paralegal. Until their 2002 arrests, Stewart and Yousry, an Arabic translator, continued working on the sheik's legal team while Sattar provided materials to read to the sheik.

The trial, which began with jury selection in May and opening statements in June, has been closely watched in part because of the rarity of a defense lawyer being prosecuted in federal court for actions she took on behalf of her client.

The case was expected to go to the jury next week. Sattar could face life in prison and Stewart and Yousry up to 20 years.

Dember warned jurors that the case was not about the Egyptian government, what the defendants thought about the government's effort to silence the sheik or the religion of Islam.

Those subjects arose as all three defendants testified in recent weeks, saying they kept the convicted sheik informed of world events but did not believe they had committed a crime. The extensive testimony by defendants is rare in a federal trial.

Prosecutors say Sattar brazenly used his telephone and fax machine to conspire with members of an Egyptian terrorist group to kidnap and kill people overseas. They say Stewart and Yousry conspired to provide material support to terrorists.

But Stewart said she felt an ethical obligation as a lawyer to keep the sheik's name and views relevant worldwide so he might someday be transferred to Egyptian prisons, where he would be watched by prison officers who know his language and traditions.

Yousry conceded on the stand that he was not immediately forthcoming with FBI agents who interviewed him after the 2001 terrorist attacks, but said he was worried about the "climate in the country" and how he would be viewed for his work for the sheik.

Jesse Jackson: Bush Would Have Left Jesus Homeless

President Bush has implemented economic policies that resemble those of the Roman Empire, which forced the baby Jesus into homelessness on the night of his birth, former civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson said in a pre-Christmas rant late Thursday.

"In the last [Bush] budget, we cut housing again, and that was Jesus' dilemma. In Bethlehem, his family ended up homeless," Jackson told MSNBC's Campbell Brown. "Rome was a wealthy country that left Jesus and Mary and Joseph, in a sense, homeless," he complained. "He was born an at-risk baby."

The GOP-bashing Democrat said that while Bush's re-election campaign had been successful in "marketing the language of religious values," the Bush White House isn't practicing what it preaches.

Jackson charged that under Bush's policies, the U.S. "appears to be indifferent toward the poor as we seek tax cuts and no-bid contracts for the wealthy; as we engage in wars of choice - driving our nation into isolation."

"Today we are celebrating the wealthy and war, not the poor and peace," he contended, while urging the Bush administration to "restore the Lyndon Baines Johnson vision where we wipe out poverty - not wipe out the poor."

Some very disturbing stories on the UN.

Seems like they should be taking care of business on their own disgusting backyard.

I especially like this stupid comment.....

"When an organisation like ours sees its budget cut by 20%, these kind of consequences have to be expected," he told journalists in the Guinean capital, Conakry."

Also noticed this comment in the last article about the world aid situation. Sounds like this came from a broad with some testosterone issues......

Poll: Hillary Clinton most admired woman
New York Democrat previously named most corrupt, most evil of millennium

? 2004 WorldNetDaily.com

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, who has previously been ranked as the most corrupt person in America and the sixth most evil person of the last millennium, is listed again as the most admired woman in a year-end poll of Americans by the Gallup Organization.

Mrs. Clinton collected 13 percent of the vote, edging out Oprah Winfrey who took 11 percent.

First lady Laura Bush came in third place at 8 percent, followed by national security adviser Condoleezza Rice at 7 percent, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at 3 percent, and former first lady Barbara Bush at 2 percent.

"Hillary Clinton has come in first or second every year for the past 12 years, starting when she became first lady in 1993," says Gallup. "In 2001, she came in second to first lady Laura Bush, and in 1995 and 1996, she came in second behind Mother Teresa. In 1994, Clinton tied with Mother Teresa. In the other years, Clinton came in first."

Last year, Hillary held a nine percentage-point lead over Winfrey, 16 to 7 percent.

The other women rounding out the top ten taking 1 percent each are Maya Angelou, Nancy Reagan, Martha Stewart, Madeleine Albright and Queen Elizabeth II, who has made more appearances than any other woman in the annual survey, being ranked 40 times.

Just two years ago, Hillary was named the most corrupt person in America by the public-interest watchdog group Judicial Watch.

Said Judicial Watch in 2002, "Like a modern-day Gollum, Mrs. Clinton's quest for political brass rings frequently descends into evil, from Whitewater to FBI Filegate to Travelgate to taking over two million dollars in illegal contributions for her Senate campaign from Judicial Watch client Peter Paul. Judicial Watch's quest is to throw her ring into the judicial 'Cracks of Doom.'"

In 1999, a survey of nearly 20,000 readers of the New York Post ranked Mrs. Clinton the sixth most evil person of the millennium.

Her husband, then-President Bill Clinton was ranked No. 2 on the evil list, second only to Adolf Hitler.

On this year's Gallup survey, Bill Clinton finished second to President George W. Bush for the most admired man.

"The president is typically the most admired man each year," notes Gallup. "The last time a president did not top the list was 1980, when Pope John Paul II was the most admired man."

The pollsters also state the percentage mentioning Bush as the most admired man is lower now than at any other point since he took office in 2001.

His high of 39 percent came in the immediate wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and now stands at 23 percent.

Rounding out the top five most admired men this year are Secretary of State Colin Powell, at 5 percent, former President Jimmy Carter at 4 percent, and Rev. Billy Graham at 3 percent.

"A videotape found in a pile of documents in Baghdad following the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime shows a former manager of the Al-Jazeera satellite channel thanking one of Saddam's sons for his support and telling him that "Al-Jazeera is your channel," the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper reported Sunday"

I am surprised he didn't add --and NYT is our link to U.S.-- ;)

and maybe add another voice of the left -ACLU

"The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released newly obtained documents on Wednesday, one of which included a disturbing account of an interrogation in late 2002."

Morning Cman---YeP this stuff gets more far fetched every day.

They wonder why country is divide and you have Boxer and lady from Ohio still whining about election outcome---

coup de grace was Leahey-Kennedy ect grilling Gonzalez yesterday---as always plenty of accusations and whining from the left but no solutions. Wished someone would have asked them what they thought of the Dems last attorneys generals accomplishments--lets see there is Janet Reno imfamous for her Ruby Ridge/Waco fiascos--fortunately administration was doing little in area of combat overseas unless you want to count her and Slick choking the enemy with heel dust in retreat after they drug our soilders thru street and set them on fire.--lets see who was previous A.T. oh yea Clark the guy who is now defending Saddam Hussein and was recently quoted by Algezeera--

"Clark also said the US itself must be tried for the November assault on Falluja, destruction of houses, torture in prisons and its role in the deaths of thousands of Iraqis in the war."

Lets say we catch terrorist who has knowedge of bomb going off in U.S. in 24 hours--Do we want a little arm twisting to save milliions or do we want someone making sure they have attorney present and their rights not violated??

I did have one high light yesterday--after finding out Staples was pulling their ads from Sinclair media over Moveon.org complaints of their backing Vets for Truth, I could not wait for our local staples whom my business and 4 other businesses in my bldg have used exclusively for 15 years to open--so I could send them fax that none of us will be using their services anymore--and attached reason.Wasn't 5 minutes manager called and said it wasn't his decision and wished we'd reconsider.
--no chance--

Murder Squad in Iraq?

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

By David Asman

Newsweek magazine ran a bizarre story this week, in which it claimed that U.S. Special Forces (search) were training Iraqi commandos to be murderers.

The article, posted on the Internet as a ?Web exclusive,? opened with a gruesome 1980 photograph of the exhumed graves of U.S. nuns murdered in El Salvador, over which a headline blared: ??The Salvador Option?; The Pentagon may put Special-Forces-led assassination or kidnapping teams in Iraq.?

The clear implication was that U.S. Special Forces units trained Salvadorans to murder innocents in the 1980s and that now our Special Forces are training murder squads in Iraq. This is not only wrong, it?s the exact opposite of what happened. Our Special Forces were sent to El Salvador (search) in the 1980s to stop random killings, which were out of control on both sides of the conflict.

The Newsweek story is riddled with other mistakes (such as mistakenly linking the Iran-Contra (search) mess with the Salvadoran killings), but none more callous than its insult to the brave men and women of our Special Forces.

If Newsweek editors honored those units, they would issue an apology to those who worked and died in Central America in the 1980s and to those who are working so hard now in Iraq. But don?t hold your breath.
