The Niners seem to love to collect Bear reject QBs. First Mirer, then Stennstrom now McNoun. Madybe they can pick up Matthews to be 2nd string behind Garcia.

49ERS SEE POTENTIAL IN MCNOWN

Thursday, June 13, 2002

McNown got up close and personal with Julian Peterson and the 49ers defense in 2000.

The 49ers roster already has plenty of quarterbacks on it: Jeff Garcia, Tim Rattay, Gio Carmazzi, Brandon Doman and Aaron Garcia. So why would the 49ers trade for a player who has yet to live up to his much hyped potential?

The answer to the question is simple: why not.

?He has had 15 starts in the National Football League and that is going to bring some competition to the quarterback position,? said Terry Donahue. ?We feel that the QB position is the most crucial one on the team. And the more competition we have, the better.?

And the bottom line is that the 49ers were able to pick McNown up for a bargain price. The left-hander was acquired for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2003 draft. McNown must make the 49ers 53-man roster for a minimum of five games in order for the trade to become official.

So just what have the 49ers acquired?

Certainly a great deal of potential. He left UCLA as the Pac-10?s all-time leader in total offense (11,285) and was second in passing yards (10,708). His three-year NFL career was marked by a shaky two seasons in Chicago where he threw for 3,111 yards and 16 touchdowns. He spent most of last season on the bench with the Dolphins.

?I don?t know why he hasn?t been successful in the NFL,? Donahue said. ?A lot of times players just fall into the wrong system and that could have been the case. He does have 15 starts and has shown the potential to play at this level, Obviously he is going to be behind the other guys when he gets here, but we?ll see what happens when he gets to work with our coaches and in our system. We felt it was worth a try.?

Donahue did say that he expects the team to bring four quarterbacks to training camp in Stockton. At this time no players have been released and no decisions have been made, including the future of Gio Carmazzi.

The 49ers and Carmazzi?s agents met earlier this week and Donahue said they are working on ?a couple of scenarios? involving the former Hofstra QB.

Terry Donahue recruited Cade McNown to UCLa, and is now 49er Gm.
